Congratulations on a fine career. You are a Hall of Famer in my eyes and heart , Sir. Growing up with the mediocre Yankee teams of the late 60s/early 70s, No. 21 brought back the pride of being a Yankee along with Don Mattingly. I have a 4 yr old playing t-ball now who reminds me of you with his fiery won't accept defeat attiude. As he ages I will constantly read the Paul recommends line to him to understand the committment/determination one must have to succeed in this beautiful game. I swear besides my two childrens birth, watching Chambliss's homer live in 75, and being at the 1997 game 7 WS game, my greatest thrill in life for humanity was listening to, barking along, and crying with the other 56k fans in your final Yankee Stadium game. I always thought the Hall of Fame was about Winners, not stats, but this generation of writers have proved me wrong. For they obviously forgot of the natural winner they had before them. LONG LIVE #21!!!! Thank you , Sir for the memories....PAUL O'NEILL, PAUL O'NEILL!!!!!!!
Sincerely,
Carlos (New Rochelle, NY/ Miami, FL)

I have always been a huge fan of yours on and off the baseball field. I loved watching you play for the Yankees, and really miss watching you play. Reading your book 'Me and My Dad' really brought tears to my eyes. It was so heartwarming to read about your very close relationship. My Dad and I have a close relationship as well. I enjoy hearing your commentary on the YES Network too. I hope both you and your family are doing well. Take care and best wishes!

Dear Paul,
My fiancee Gregg Clyne posted a message on this board a few months ago. I am the girlfriend (we'd since gotten engaged) that gave him 'best birthday gift of my life' - a signed picture poster of you tipping your hat during your last game in Yankees Stadium. I wanted to share that Gregg died a month ago today after battling cancer at the age of 27. He truly was inspired by you and what you did as a Yankee and in your life. He read your book about you and your dad just as recently as July, and he spoke of you as a great hero and a true warrior. Gregg is my warrior for he fought a great fight and has been a true inspiration to me and to all who knew him. Thank you for inspiring him, and, in turn, me. All my best, Rita

Hey Paul,
I have been a devout Yankee fan since I was a little girl. I used to route for Mickey Rivers and Bucky Dent was a dream. No one ever played as well as Bucky until I saw you!!!!! Now, watching the games just aren't as fun since you've retired. However, when I do have the game on, my ears seem to be able to pick right up on your voice when you are talking with Michael Kay. My little niece became a Paulie fan when she was 3, and now at 11 she still wears the jersey with the 21 on it. My 8 year old nephew is a die hard Jeter fan, but he still has respect for you. He makes it a point to show me anything he sees that says O'Neill or 21. Just know that you are truly missed, but I will take you anyway I can get you. I just wish that the cameras would show you more!!!

I sat chanting I WANT PAUL, I WANT PAUL. You will be inducted in the Hall of Fame next year - I will be there when that takes place in Cooperstown. I wish you all the best.

Dear Mr. Oneill,
My boyfriend, Eric g., is inlisted in the USMC. Currently, he is serving his second deployement in Iraq. And, as if this isn't enough, he is also going to spend his 21st birthday there this September. Eric is your number one fan.
I was hoping to bring a smile to his face for his brithday, despite the desperate scenes around him. Could you help? Anything, an autograph, just...anything at all Sir would not only make his entire year, but also give him something else to feel proud about.
Also, it may be funny to know that our relationship is quite unique. You see, I am from Boston. I hope me going to a Yankees player, when I am a Sox fan myself, shows my devotion to us.
If you could do anything at all I know he would really love it.
Thank you so much for reading this,
Sincerely a proud USMC girlfriend,
Tiff

I only ever got to see you play at Yankee Stadium once; it was in 2001 against the Mariners in August. I knew you were going to be retiring later that year and that game meant the world to me. My friend had bought me the tickets, a 2000 Subway World Series jersey of yours, as well as over 400 of your baseball cards. You will always be my favorite player in baseball history and the Yankees will never be the same without you. Hopefully the next time I visit Yankee Stadium I will catch you broadcasting for the YES network.

I guess from reading the rest of the messages in your guestbook I'm not the only one that admired your character as much as your contributions to the Yanks. I met you the day before Paul O'Neill day at the stadium. I was staying at the same hotel as you and ran into you and your son in the gym. We watched the 9th together of the Yanks game and talked about how good Mo had been in his career. Afterwards, you patiently dealt with me as I bumbled through buying a camera to get a picture (dohh-it didn't turn out). You spent 10 minutes with some clown you didn't know just because I said I was a fan. It's no wonder you have the admiration and respect of all Yankee fans.
Any chance you will be making an appearance at a Yankee Fantasy Camp? If so, would you post it ahead of time so your fans could get some 'pre-warning?'
Thanks for the memories!

I wish my girlfriend would surprise me with an 8X10 of that moment in Game 5 of the 2001 World Series, like previous poster Gregg Clyne's did. Watching the Old-Timers' Day celebration today and the interview with David Cone (Paul was mentioned) brought back vivid O'Neill memories. The two most incredible moments for me? That 9th-inning sendoff in 2001, and Paul's overwhelming emotion following the 1999 World Series victory. A tear or two? No way - for me, they flow freely, like the Harlem River, at the merest mention of those events.
Paulie's intensity rubs off on everyone.

I moved to chicago from new york a few years ago one of the greatest ball players I have ever seen play is Paul O'Neil not because he put up hall of fame numbers just because in his approach to the game. I remember Pete Rose when I was a kid and he played very hard aside from the gambling but I thought everybody played like that not so. But Paul was one of those guys who played like that here's to you Paulie

Paul. What can i Say? you are my favorite player of all time. As you grow older, it becomes hard for people to find heroes in sports anymore. I will never feel an admiration i did for you towards another sports figure. You were my childhood idol. You had passion, heart, intensity. You are a winner and a warrior. If the yankees had 28 players like you, they'd be winning championships left and right. i hate the way they buy superstar players these days. Can we find more guys like Paul please? Anyways, when i see the video of Yankee Stadium chanting your name in unision, i always get choked up. . It's awesome. So many great moments. You are a true role model on and off the field. Stay well Paul.

Paul - I got the best birthday gift of my life just a couple months ago from my girlfriend: a large signed picture of you tipping your cap during your last game at Yankee Stadium.
That moment, which I had told her, was the most memorable sports moment to me and still, the only one that brings a tear to my eye each time I see it. It brings back that live moment, when all present Yankee fans were chanting your name and pounding the back of their chairs. Everyone knew our warrior was leaving the game and the end of a Yankee-era was leaving with you.
Thanks for the memories.

My beloved Yankees are underachieving again.
Again? But they won the AL east last year, you say?
Yes, again. With their payroll and talent level they should win the World Series every year. After all they spend...heck yes!
Let's first start by saying this is a wonderful collection of professionals. And that may be the problem. They lack fire. In fact, they have lacked fire (and World Series championships) since Paul O'Neill retired. The most emotion you'll see on this team is Derek Jeter pumping his fist or clapping after he gets a key hit.
Last night a group of exuberant youngsters on the Tampa Devil Rays beat the Yankees 4-2 despite putting on the leadoff hitter for the Yankees in every one of the first eight innings. The Yankees ran themselves out of this game with base running blunders and a lack of hitting in the clutch. Yes, Gary Sheffield completely crushed a two run homer...but he also left seven base runners stranded throughout the game. And the Rays handled the fact that their pitchers threw more balls than strikes...I mean that literally...in the game. Meaning that the Yankees had 'hitter's counts' most of the night. How? They flawlessly...and I do mean flawlessly... cut down Yankees base runners with brilliant rundowns. OK, the Rays'Seth McClung was late covering first base on a ball hit to the right side...but we'll chalk that up to either inexperience or laziness...that's a problem for the Rays to address.
Frankly, the Devil Rays looked like the better coached team. By far. Joe Torre cannot continue to win simply because he has the best players. The past few editions of the Yankees have looked ill prepared in basic fundamentals. The lack of fire is also a reflection on the guy at the top.
Well...a Lou Piniella coached team would never have these problems (hint hint).
Another problem...this year's major off-season pickup, Johnny Damon...the wonderful leadoff hitter has the lowest On Base Percentage of anybody in the starting lineup. What's wrong with that picture?
The Yankees will most likely win another Eastern Division title this year. In spite of themselves. But if the cost of poor preparation in spring training doesn't get addressed they will again discover that against the very best teams in the post season they cannot afford to make these kinds of missteps.

Paul,
We miss you! You are not, much to our chagrin, on the YES network enough. We enjoy your voice of experience, and your views about what is transpiring while the game is in progress.
We hope to see you more often on the YES network, pre, during, and post games. You will always be a 'key essential' and a monumental part of the New York Yankees.
We look back on the halcyon years when you were anchored in right field, and all of the wins you helped clinch, and we miss you. However, hearing you on the YES family, brings joy to our family, as we wait in anticipation of what is to come, this 2006 season. But, most especially, we are so glad that you will be an integral part of the Yankee family irrespective of the outcome...
Stay well Paul, and please do more games, don't deny your adoring fans any longer... All our best to you and your family... We love you~

My son, Casey, and I met you at the show in West Haven, CT last Sunday.I am a long time Yankee fan going back to the 1960 season. I can never express to you what a special day it was for us to get your autograph and each pose for a picture with you. You have been my sons biggest sports hero since he started playing baseball. I think he is still in awe of meeting you and shaking your hand. In your final season in 2001, we visited Tropican Field while on vacation in Florida. During batting practice a ball was hit to centerfield over your head and just over the fence. Casey reached up from the first row behind the fence and made a barehanded catch. You probably don't remember this but it was a moment frozen in time for us. Paul, you looked up at Casey and said, 'it would be a lot easier to just buy a ball in the souvenir shop.' That moment and the baseball he caught, last Sunday afternoon meeting you, along with watching your entire time as a Yankee, was such a pleasure and a privlege for both of us. You were and still are an inspiration to all Yankee fans. You will always remain the heart and soul of the 1996-2000 Yankee dynasty. Best of luck to you and your family and thanks again for all you have meant to us. God bless.

My brother-in-law and I are die hard Yanks fans and have followed the team since the 70's. We loved that you gave each at bat the attention that it required. It was almost as if each at bat was a World Series game decider. I have a temper so I understood each time to ran past first base and slammed your helmet in disgust. Fans like me appreciate that stuff. I know people talk about integrity of the game and that throwing fits isn't right. I know why you did that kind of stuff. You did it because you tried so hard to be PERFECT. You were your worst critic on the field my man. I loved to watch you play and your love for the game brought me back to baseball after the strike. Not Big Mac or Sosa or that tainted home run race but you and your love for BASEBALL. I'll never forget the '97 team that didn't make it. Although they didn't win the title it was on of my favorite teams and although Jarett Wright was a Yankee killer for the Indians in the deciding series your last at bat in '97 was one that I will tell my grandchildren about. You stretched that single into a double because you knew somebody had to do it. You wanted to win and you even played hurt. In the days of Bonds and Terrell Owens, it's refreshing to tell kids the story of Paul O'Neill. Thanks again Paulie.

This is the first time I have been on your website in a while. I have been a fan since day one, when I was only about 10-11 years old and now I am 30! I have almost all of your baseball cards, photos, etc... I followed your career all the way. You were my absolute favorite player. When you retired I retired from watching baseball with you. It was a very sad moment for me. I would like to know what you are doing now? Do you have any future plans in baseball? Please email me and let me know!
Thanks!

I have a lot of your merchandise from the picture of you tipping your cap off at Yankee Stadium to a Keychain with your face on it. You were one of the greatest inspirations in my life. Even in my room I got a little section dedicated to you. Hopefully one of these days I'll get that opportunity to get a chance to meet you. You are truly the WARRIOR.

The longest part of my year is from the end of Oct. to Feb. I was sad for months after your retirement. I still to this day watch yankees classics just to catch a game with you in it. I have numerous paper articles cut out and for xmas I got my tire cover with you name and number on it. I can't wait to go to the stadium the day the retire your number.

Hi Paul! I don't know if you are much of a hockey fan, but the New York Rangers are honoring Mark Messier Thursday night at Madison Square Garden and retiring his number in the process. Paul, I am a lifelong Yankees fan and Rangers fan too. I have always seen allot of similarities between you and Mark Messier: You are both great leaders, both have great passion for your sports and you are both great winners who came to New York - after having already won elsewhere - and showed a new group how to win. Again, Paul - thanks for all the great memories!

I just found this website and I think it is awesome! You have been my favorite Yankee since coming over from the Reds. I always thought you were alot of the heart and soul of those great Yankees teams that won those World series. I have my sons playing ball and I told them
while watching you play this is a great ballplayer and to take in account how your approach to the game was! You always took every at bat like it was for the last pitch of a World Series. I can see by your book and this website you are a great family man as well. I would like to say it is a pleasure to go on this site to get merchandise and keep up on current events and also to let you know it was also a pleasure to watch and root you on all those great years! Thanks for the memories! I look foward to buying alot of b-ball bats, photos and other items you have for sale on here!

Dear Mr. O'Neil, I was first in line at the Steiner Sports signing at Rooseveltfield Mall in Long Island on 11/27/05. I waited 5 hours for your autograph and I was not disappointed. I love baseball and go to many signings, but yours was really special to me. Not only did I meet my hero, but he was by far the nicest player I've ever met. You were nice enough to take a picture with me and talk to me. It was only one minute but it will last a life time. Just before I left, you took the Yankee hat off my head and signed that as well. Mr. O'Neil I can't begin to thank you enough for everything. You've got a life long fan in me. Thank you again.

Paul,
Its been four years now since you have retired. Baseball just isn't the same. I saw game 7 of the 01' World Series the other day on the Classic Sports channel. It was bittersweet to watch because that was the end, but I will never get that sweet lefthanded swing out of my head.My brother Sean and I first met you in K.C. twelve years ago after a Royals game. I will never forget the goosebumps I had all over from meeting my idol. The few other times we got to say hi were no better. I was just as nervous. I am now 24 and just graduated from the Univ. of Nebraska. My bro and I have followed your career since you got called up in Cincy. The basement of my house is filled w/ pics and jerseys you were kind enough to sign for me. I want everyone who comes to my house to know that you were and still are a big inspiration in my life.....GOD BLESS!

You were my favorite player to watch because i've never seen anyone in baseball play with the passion that you played with. I will never forget Cleveland in 1997. I honestly believe that eventhough my beloved Yankees didn't win that year, that double you hit and how hard you worked to get to second base inspired many players to produce that amazing 1998 season. Anyways, God Bless and best wishes to you and your family. You are an inspiration to many, even here in Santo Domingo!

Hi Paul, I love it when you help broadcast the Yankees games. You were my all time favorite baseball player and I still miss seeing you play. I, also, read your book about you and your Dad and enjoyed it. I was very happy to read that you can't see yourself walking in the woods carrying a gun. Whatever your reasons may be for writing that, I love animals and hate hunting and guns so I was glad to read it. I love baseball and it always dissapoints me to hear how many players (such as Andy Pettitte, who otherwise seems to be such a nice person) go hunting.
Also, this past weekend my husband and I were in Provincetown, MA and my husband, as usual, was wearing his Yankees cap. We were walking on the pier and a guy said, 'My dog's trained to attack people with hats like that.' Then, he laughed and said, 'Hey, guess who rented my house this week. Paul O'Neill's sister!' I said, 'Oh, he was my all time favorite player. I cried when he retired.' The guy said, 'Oh, yeah, I held a party.' And, my husband said, 'As any good Red Sox fan would have.' :-)
Any chance we'll see you in P-town one of these days? :-)

Mr. O'Neill,
I have been a fan all my life. Now, my son is growing up a Yankees fan.
In the past two months I had pleasure of running into you twice! Once was at the little league game in Cincinnati, and then a few months later in the elevator at Cellular Field.
First, I would like to thank you for signing the ball for my son. Talking Yankee baseball, especially discussing A-Rod's 10 RBI night with you, was unforgettable. I called many, many friends to tell about my luck of meeting Paul O'Neill.
I want to thank you for being so courteous. As bad as I felt to bother you, I wanted that ball signed even worse. It meant so much to me and my son. You could have been right by telling me to take a hike, but you didn't, because you are Paul O'Neill, The Legend!
I bothered you in the elevator again, by telling you of our meeting in Blue Ash and stating the fact of how small this world is. Once again, you were respectful to me.
Thank you for being that person!
Thank you for all the years and all the pennants and all the years to come. I will be there when the Yankees retire #21. I will be in New York cheering on one of the greatest men to ever play the game of baseball, and one of the greatest personalities in sports!
Thank you!
Your true fan.

Paul, I just wish that more players would take a page from the 'O'Neill B-Ball Theory' by playing with that intensity you had. It was so easy to see that you left your heart on the field every day. I will always remember that look that you had when you hit a homer, I knew that when Paul hit the ball and he immediately looked down....it was gone! But I also remember the times when you'd strike out or hit a weak grounder, ironically those are the times I recall more vividly because I would feel the emotion that you were showing, your actions after making an out showed me and many other fans how much you cared about your game, your teammates, and our great city of New York. Thank you so much for the memories Paul, I think that many true Yankee fans carry a part of you in their hearts and will continue to do so forever.

Hey Paul, I have to admit, i am not a yankee fan. Me and my father are.....gulp...Red Sox fans. But I just wanted to you know that you are a fine baseball player. I hate the Yankees with my guts, but every time you walked up to the plate, I am not exactly proud to say that part of me wanted you to crush one to Kindom Come. Heck, most of the time, you did! Listen, I know youre big on the drums, and ive heard you and Bernie Williams have smooth jam sessions in the locker room. Well i am a big fan of jam sessions, and an even bigger fan of some cool cool blues produced by a couple multi talented ballplayers/musicians. If you or Bernie werent to busy, maybe you could tell me where I could get a hold of some of your jammin drum melodies, or Bernies bass sounds. Well, keep on keepin on. Big fan here, and always remember, let the smooth jazz rule you before you try and rule the jazz.......

Hey Paul,
First off i just want to thank you for all you
did for the Yankees Organization..
Also I want to thank you for how much heart you put into playing baseball because I first saw you in person when I was like 9 or 10 and I had already liked you.. but when i saw how hard you ran the bases everytime on.. it made you one of my all-time favorite players.. it also inspired me to do the same now that I'm older playing baseball myself... every time i get on i think of how hard you played and what a differnce that made in games i try to do the same..
im not all that fast, but im one of the best base runners because i hussle more than most people and i credit alot of that to you......
One last thing.. can you consider unretiring and playing center? we could really use you...you were smart though.. you got out while you were on top..
Thanks again..
