While I am a Boston Red Sox fan, I'm also a baseball fan. I watched you throughout your career with the Reds and the Yankees, and I appreciate how
you played the game. You used every at-bat as if it could be your last and
you ran out every play. I wish you luck in all your endeavors in and out of
baseball. Yes, in case you're wondering, my father was a distant cousin to
former Yankees catcher, Thurman Munson. I even named my son after him.
Thanks!

Paulie, come back! The team needs you and Tino back. Its just not the
same. It showed this season. And I don't think the Yankees will ever be the
same. This years team didn't have that glare in their eye that the Yankees
usually have. Well I guess its because half of the team is new. Well I just
wanted to say Hi. God Bless.

I said it all season-the Yankees missed your contributions more than any
other player. Now with the Yankee season over-it was so apparent how much
you were missed. The heart and soul of the team was missing!! You spoiled all Yankee fans with your determination and passion for the game. I miss you. Wishing a happy and health off-season...Hope to see you back at the stadium soon.

Well Paul, the 2002 playoffs are officially over for the Yankees and I think that it is apparent that you were truly the "LEADER AND THE UNOFFICIAL CAPTAIN" of the New York Yankees. I know that you felt that it was time for you to retire, and God knows that you deserve it after all
of the hard work you have done on the field, but I think that this team could definitely have benefited from your "leadership" one more year to help them stay on the road to winning. I have always respected and admired you as a player and as a person and I hope that you will continue to be part of the Yankees in the future, doing more for the YES Network and possibly more with the team itself. It is very obvious that your involvement is definitely needed for this team's success. I hope that Mr. Steinbrenner is smart enough to ask you for your imput in getting this team back on its feet, he could use someone with your baseball knowledge and expertise. I look forward to seeing you on the YES Network again next season and can't wait for PAUL O'NEILL DAY when you will have your plaque and place of honor in Monument Field along with all of the other Yankee Greats! No one deserves it more than you. Continued success in all that you do and may God continue to bless you and your beautiful family.

When my boyfriend, his family and i went to a resturant for his 17th
birthday, baseball fans started to stare at him. We were all wondering why
but we later found out that my boyfriend looks like you. When the man said
that another turned around and said the same which made me wonder how you
look. As i was looking at some items on your site i realized that he does
resemble you. If only he could play like you he would be able to take your
place. Its just remarkale how he looks like you.

was lacking a few things to go all the way again. One would be you of course,
another would be tino and scott.YOU three brought heart and soul and the

Dear Paul; I really miss seeing you on the field. I just didn't have as
much interest this year(or last) as I did when you were playing. You were
the heart of the team and my absolute favorite player. Just want you to know
you will always be a good memory for me and baseball spirit as a whole. Love
you, Jane

First off I would like to thank you for the years spent with the Reds. I was very frustrated when they removed you from our team. Mistake. I met
you once in Cincinnati at the Bally's off of Reed Hartman Highway. You were
working out after the Mariners had knocked the Bombers out of the playoffs
in I believe 94 or 95 I was in college at the time. I knew you and I have
never been much of an autograph person (who cares about a signature) so I
just told you nice to meet you finally and that I was sorry to have seen you
go. I played baseball until the age of 26. I have always played with
extreme intensity and love of the game. Balls to the wall all of the time,
100%. That is the way I was raised to play. Your intensity is what
baseball was and the way that it should be. However, I am sad to see that
many players do not play with such passion but only play because they can
and it makes them money. I truly did miss seeing you play the season
following your retirement. You style will be missed and respected as such.
Do us a favor here in Cincy. If you ever run into Junior tell him to hustle
to first base.....damnit.

I was never much of a baseball fan. My dad had grown up in Brooklyn and
was a big Dodgers fan. He never really got over the disappointment of their
leaving and transferred some of is loyalty to the Bronx Bombers. Growing up
in my house in the 1960's we always had some sport on the television set,
football with the Bills, the occasional bowling tournament, and the Yankees.
My kid brother, to be different, chose to root for the Mets, so it made for
some lively arguments. My father would not be dissuaded from his support
for his 'second' team. In 1994, the baseball strike drove a lot of people
away from the game, and even Dad was annoyed. In 1996 I began work, after
thirteen years as a housewife and mom, with a woman who was and is a huge
Atlanta fan. I caught some of her enthusiasm for the game and late in the
nineties, started tuning in to an occasional game. In 1999 my attention was
caught by a lanky right fielder playing for the Bombers. Who was number 21,
of the quick temper and oh so very evident love of this most American of
American ball sports? Paul captured my attention like no other ball player
could have and, partly out of loyalty to my Dad, but more out of enjoyment
of watching him play, number 21 has made of me an ardent Yankees fan. I
miss him and wish him the greatest continuing success off the ball field.
He showed us what baseball was supposed to be, once again, and I hope
today's players remember that the most important thing, more than high
salary or prestige, is to love the game they've had the luck to be able to
play. Baseball and the Yankees live! I know. I have the t-shirts.

hey paulie, i really enjoyed your game analysis this season and i look
forward to seeing and hearing more from you next season. i think your
position as a living yankee great gives you a great perspective on the
pressures and influences on the current players. i especially enjoyed seeing
your interview from home on the pre-game show before ALDS game 2, and
hearing you say how strange it was to realize that the world doesnt stop
because the yankees are in the post season. but i have to tell you - for the
true yankees fans (like myself!) the world does stop during the post season
and many of us practically live pitch to pitch just like you guys do.
> by the way, seeing you in the broadcast booth did help alleviate the
"o'neill withdrawal" your fans have been suffering from a tiny little bit -
but i am convinced that the unhappy outcome of this season would have been A
LOT different if you would have been on the field. we miss your bat and
glove and the outfield was empty this year without you!

great to see you on the pre-game shows. You look well rested and content.
But, I really believe in my heart that if you were playing this year, the
Yankees would be world champions. I know I speak for many Yankee fans, It
would be great to see you in right field again.

watch the team play. I am now 40 and still remember the song on the radio as
me and my Dad pulled into the parking-lot "Step right up hurry ,hurry, the
show's about to begin" My husband and I rival over baseball. We only agree
on Tampa Bay. Someone e-mailed you from Shelton. Ct. That's where I was raised. Hope to

I have been a New York Yankees fan for about a half century. They have won
13 World Championships during that time. The players that I think represent
those great teams from their respective eras are The Mick, Yogi, Whitey, The
Rajah, Thurman, Puff, Gator, Donnie Baseball, Jete, and YOU. Simply, It
doesn't get any better than that! I got to see you play in 1995 during two
exhibition games played at Coors Field. I think there were more Yankee fans
there than Rockies fans. They were the first games after the big strike. We
loved watching you play then and in the postseasons that followed. I'm not
sure this years club has your intensity. We'll see. GO YANKS and MUCH THANKS
to #21.

The biggest thrill during the current New York Yankee playoff run was Paul
O'Neil. You just cannot teach character that Paul had. He went out there
every night and gave 100% every nightin front of the fans at Yankee stadium
and those who were fortunate to watch the Yankee games at home. George
Steinbrenner was very correct in calling him a warrior. I remeber
especially the catch in Atlanta in 1996 that brought the series back to New
York. The amazing thing about that was he was hurt, but you never knew it
by the way he played. When anybody asks me who my favorite Yankee is, it is
Paul O'Neil. I am sure there are many people out there who will join me in
saying that his presence in the dugout and in the field is missed greatly!

mr.o'neill, i cannot begin to tell you how much of an inspiration you are to me. the courage and professionalism you displayed as a yankee, along
with the magic you are associated with. it's very emotional for me to sit
at yankee stadium along the 3rd base line and look across and not see your
familiar face. in my mind, as i'm sure in many others, that will always be
paulie's corner. thank you again and again, i hope you are enjoying your retirement.

Paulie, you have been my favorite player from the day I started following the Yankees. Whenever I mention to somebody that I'm a Yankee fan, people
ask who my favorite player is. Now that you're not there, I don't know what
to answer. Of course I love all the Yanks, but who could compare to you?
Sure, I love Soriano, but how can his two years be compared to all the ones
where I watched you? Sure, Jorge's amazing, but could he ever show the
enthusiasm that made you the "Warrior"? Sure, Jeter's great, but does he
talk to his bat the way you did, letting us know just how much you wanted to
get a hit? Sure, Bernie's one of the best, but can we ever call him the
'heart and soul' of the Yanks the way we did you? The fact is, that players
come and go, but nobody will ever compare to you and everything you've done
for the Yankees over the years. And even as this season comes to an end,
we're still trying to get over the fact that you're not there, still trying
to go to a game not expecting to see you there. It's hard - we miss you.
Hope retirement is living up to your expectations!

Hi Paul! I was at the Yankees-Chisox game at the Stadium this past Friday
night. Between innings at one point during the game, the Jumbotron in
Centerfield played highlights of your career with the Bronx Bombers along
with what has unofficially become your signature song "I am the Warrior" by
Patty Smythe & Scandal. What a thrill it was again seeing your great leaping
catches, laser-like throws from rightfield, and of course that textbook
perfect swing, stroke & connection, and best of all, watching that smile
come across yiour face as you celebrated yet another World Championship.
After all that, then you were shown on the Jumbotron live from the Press Box
& everyone in attendance gave you yet another well deserved standing
ovation! I was moved by your wave of appreciation to all of us, as I could
see you sincerely appreciated our showing you once again how much we love
you! Thanks for everything, especially the great memories, which seem even
more special today!

On Saturday 14,2002 my eight year old son and I came to see you at the
Cingular Wireless store in Paramus,NJ. I didn't think we were going to make
it because my son had a soccer game at 12 noon. Well as soon as the game
ended I decided to give it a try even thought it was 1:20. We made it there
at a quater to two. We were one of the last people on line. I didn't think
we were going to make it in,especially since the workers were discouraging
us and practically telling us to leave. But my son was determined to stay.
Finally they said you would finish out the line even thoughit was 2:30 and
you had to be at the YES Network. I just wanted to say thank you.You made
our day. You have always been one of my all-time favorites. Even when you
were with the Reds. You are a class act and have great intensity on the
field. Every ball player should have your attitude toward the game and the
fans.

My wife & I attended a Celebrity Golf event sponored by the Mohegan Sun
Casino in CT. We were dissapointed to find out that Paul had to cancel. We
found out that Paul would be at a Cingular store in NJ on Sept 14th. We
drove down from CT and stood in line for 2 Hours. We were told Paul had to
leave by 2:00 to make the Yankee's post game show. We finally made it to the
front door and exactly 2:00. We found out that Paul had agreed to stay to
2:15 because of the large number of people still awaiting. I cannot began to
tell you what a thrill it was to meet Paul. He not only signed a fan club
T-shirt for my wife & a very special Yankee Bear for me (I gave this bear to
my wife and it sits in the back of our car. It's my wife's "Paulie Bear") he
took the time to talk a little to both of us and gave me a opportunity to
take his picture with my wife. Upon leaving the store I noticed a car right
in front of the store. The man behing the wheel looked like Paul. I made a
comment and rolled down the window and we got the pleasure of not only
talking with him (by the way it was Paul's brother) but meeting Paul's wife.
They were extremly friendly. We always knew Paul was a class act on the
field, but after meeting him in person we were both overcome with how
sincere and friendly he was.

When I was just 6 years old my dad took me to my first baseball game, we
sat in the Right Field Bleachers. My first memory of Yankee Stadium was
watching you run out to Right Field, being just 7 years old I asked my dad
who you were. "That's Paul O'neill." he said to me. "Is he any good?" I
asked. "Yes, he's one of the best." He said to me. From that moment on
you have been my favorite player, my hero. All through Little Leagues I
tried my best to emulate everything you did, from your batting stance, to
the way you ran the bases after a homer, to your temper tantrums! I wanted
to be just like you. Paulie, thank you for being my hero! In my eyes you will always be my

i rushed back to westchester from work to see as much of an afternoon
game vs. seattle during last year's playoffs. i walked into the bar across the street from my school to have a burger and watch as much of the game as i could before my mid-term. i ran into my ex-girlfreind and asked her if i could sit down, since she had a great table with a direct view of the t.v. she said no since we had just broken up recently after a few years of dating. paul was just stepping up to the plate, so i offered a proposition. if he hits a blast, slide over and let me order some dinner and watch a few innings. she looked right at me and said "sure, it will never happen, he's an o'neill". and sure enough, paulie hits a bomb. as he rounded the bases in typical fashion (expressionless like a true professional doing something that's old hat),i quietly sat down in the same manner. i ordered a burger, didn't gloat, didn't need to say a word, it was terrific. so paulie, thanks for the great seat and the satisfaction that wednesday afternoon.

A few years ago we were lucky enough to sit in the right field box seats
right behind Paulie. We were close to the bleacher creatures who were
yelling at us because we were sitting in box seats, "Box seats s--k". With
no prompting from anyone, people in our section starting back, "We got beer,
we got beer". Well, all of a sudden Paulie turned around and smiled at our
section. It was hilarious to see the bleacher creatures stopped in their
tracks, but equally as much fun to know that Paul was listening! It was a
great game, with a great view!

you've been my favorite player, the heart and soul of the Yankees and Major

Hi Paul. I'm sad that you've retired - I am a big Yankees fan and you were
my favourite player. We don't get as much baseball over here in England,
which is a great shame and although I knew the last World Series game was to
be your last, it was still a shock to not see your name on the line-up, and
a big shock that Tino, Scott and Chuck had also gone. I was gutted. YOu
have a big fan base in the UK, as does baseball in general, despite having
to stay up 'til after midnight (sometimes after 1pm) to see the game. My
big wish and plan is to one day see the Yankees play at Yankee Stadium but
my biggest regret will always be not seeing you play there. Although I
remain true to the Yankees, it just doesn't feel the same this year. Good
luck with your broadcasting career and whatever you turn your hand to and
don't forget us all in the UK, and all over the world! We all miss you. You
are a great player and team player and I'm sure the rest of the team miss
you very much. x

collection? Hope to see you soon on Yes as soon cablevision decides to cary

I became a Yankee fan in the early 90's when you were traded to the
Yankees from the Reds. I have watched you ever since. I can't tell you how
bad I feel that you no longer play the game that you played with such
intensity and love. You are the reason I watch baseball and love the game
today. I hope all is well, and I wish you nothing but the best. Take care
and good luck in all you do.

The first Yankee game I can remember going to was when I was 11 years old.
My family had tickets along the right field line and I will never forget
watching you play. You instantly became my favorite Yankee. Although I
never got to meet you personally you were such an inspiration to me. I was
fortunate enough to somehow convince someone who I think was a ground crew
member to let me get my picture taken standing in right field of Yankee
stadium before one of your games. Every time I look at that picture it
brings back so many memories I have because of you. Thank you for all of
them. Yankee Stadium is not the same without you.

lot of people tell me you're retired and that i shouldn't wear your shirts

Hi Paulie, I am your biggest fan. Sorry you retired. When I was in
kindergarten, my friend Jordan Haul O'neill said that he was your son. I
found out that he was lying when I watched Yankeeography. Now that I don't
know him anymore. I went to a Yankee game last week. One of the trivia
questions was how do you spell O'neill. Of course you were the only one who
spelled it right. You are so awesome! My mom is the #1 Jeter fan. one time I
bought her a Jeter book (like she has enough) that had mentioned you in it.
It said you told Derek he was the best rookie you've met. We have a room
absolutly full of Yankee stuff. Can you arrange me an O'neill shirt I can
never find them? See ya!

Hey Paulie. I admire your intensity and mind set towards the game. I saw
a Yankeeography on the YES Network, and I noticed how when you did something
wrong you really got down on yourself. I am the same way, and I now try to
base my athletics around your type of mind set. When you do something
right, like hitting a homer, or at the least getting a hit, instead of
gettin excited and forgetting about what you did and what adjusments you
made to get that hit like most ball players do, you just say to yourself,
ok, now thats what I need to do every time. You don't let anything but the
best satisfy your cravings for success. I admire you and have the upmost
respect. There was not a man on any Yankee team you have been on that I
would have over you to hit or play right-field in a clutch at-bat or inning.
Just like the boss said, you are a warrior. I miss seein you in
right-field, and I bet you miss playin, but don't worry, every Yankee fan
respects you for what you've done. You had a great career. I thank you for
being a role-model for me, and now I know I will better myself as an
athelete because of you. I have the same craving for success as you do.
Thanks Paul.

That really sums it up for me on you Paul. Seriously I was a Tiger Fan about 12 years ago being Michigan is my home town. Well It was around 96 or 97 I started to watch the Yankees and My husband pointed you out to me on the TV and From that day on I was in complete AWWWW of what love for the game you have and I have watched you ever since and have enjoyed the countless moments you have given on the field. I had only wished I could have seen you play in person than on TV. My dream is one day to actually see a game in Yankee Stadium and just maybe you will be there if I keep my fingers crossed tightly. I attended a Yankee game this past week (vs. Toronto - Jeff Weaver pitched

I've somehow grown accustomed to not seeing you there lately, but at times I
just can't believe you're not standing there. Every time I passed by someone

Paulie O, I never thought that anyone would ever be able to replace Mattingly in my mind as the heart and soul of the Yankees, but you my friend did it. i was disappointed that i couldnt make it down to the stadium for the 2001 world series but while the many fans were cheering Paul's name with pride my family sitting at home also started to chant. You could tell that all yankee fans had that special love and respect for other yankee fans, it didnt matter if they knew you or not. The best was seeing Paulie standing outside the batters box listening to fans yell his name. With the Who's Baba O'Riley playing in the background Paul wanted to make something happen for his fans. Paul O'Neill's time with the Yankees evokes so many memories for me
that span the "Wonder Years" of my childhood and young adulthood, but three in particular stand out for me. I remember seeing him for the first time at the Stadium in what was arguably his finest season, 1994. Even at the age of 16, I admired and appreciated his tough as nails mentality on the
field, his shyness and soft spoken nature off. My first real image and earliest memory of Paul was that night in '94 when he was standing in right field with that big Brut aftershave banner behind the right field wall reading: "REAL MEN ARE BACK." I remember thinking what a tough competitor Paulie
was and so when I think about the 1994 Yankees, I immediately harken back to that image of him standing alone on the green grass in Yankee Stadium with that big banner hoisted above him all summer long; I thought surely the Yankees and Brut made it for Paulie. The second memory of Paul was when I actually met him for the first and only time. It was September of 2000 and my family was in Kansas City for our annual Yankee trip (we live in Omaha). My Dad and I were in Brooks Brothers shopping when Paul walked in and sat down in the shoe dept. As my favorite player, naturally I noticed him right away though at the age of 22. I really didn't want to bother him as I respected him so much, I didn't want him to think I was a pest. However, the temptation proved too great so I slowly walked over to him and shook his hand. He was so nice and engaging, asking me how far Omaha was from Kansas City. As I shook his hand it dawned on me that this was the first Yankee player I had encountered where I hadn't asked for an autograph. It didn't matter- Paulie was so accomodating that day that shaking his hand and having that experience is much more special to me than having him sign something for ten
seconds..... Which leads to my most poigant Paul O'Neill moment- Game 5 of the 2001 World Series. As I sat there hoping for a Yankee comeback and knowing full well that this was Paul's last Yankee Stadium game, light tears began streaming from my eyes at what I saw on my television. This man whom I had so admired for nine years was walking off the greatest stage in professional sports to the most inspiring send-off I had ever seen for any athlete- ever. I clapped like everyone else that night- only to go bananas moments later when Scott Brosius delivered deja vu to the Diamondbacks. I taped the game that night like I tape every Yankee game, and in the ensuing months I have come to realize that that moment of appreciation for Paul really symbolizes for me the idea that a) he really was retiring, and b) I wasn't a kid anymore- I had become a young adult just as Paul had become a grizzled veteran on the verge of retirement. Thank you Paulie for being to me what Mickey Mantle was to my Dad's generation. I will look forward to purchasing tickets for Paul O'Neill Day when they retire #21 for good- and only then will I consider "The Wonder Years" chapter of my life closed.

I should have gone to bed long ago, but I've been up for hours reading all
these wonderful messages from so many people and places. Your life and work
are clearly such an important inspiration to such a vast array of lives,
including my own. I lived in Brooklyn from 1994 until Spring 2002 and have
been a baseball fan all my life, but I have never seen as fine an example of
work well done by any athlete. Becoming a Yankee fan as a child watching
Reggie in the '77 World Series broadcast; seeing you blast a two-run game
winner (right after I predicted it!) in my first trip to Yankee Stadium;
this stuff was nothing compared to watching your simple yet astoundingly
effective approach to each game, week in and week out, night after night for
those all-too-brief eight years. But time waits for no man, Paul, and I
wish for you and your family so many happy years to share, wherever you may
find yourself, and however you spend your time. Have fun with the magic of
music and don't ever stop helping children, for they shall rarely encounter
a person who is so undeniably a winner. Thank you most for your spirit,
Paul. For giving it all, all of the time. For picking up the world's
greatest city in its darkest days and giving us something to cheer about.
For making headlines for all the right reasons. For the countless clutch
hits and the long, masterful at-bats, the gun-em-out-at-home throws, the
artful baserunning.

will to win, and your ability to succeed. You made watching games and
visiting Yankee Stadium extremely exciting. You are such a class act and a
great person. I wish you nothing but the best in your life. #21 will always
live in my heart. Thank you Paul for the wonderful memories.

I am only 14, but you have inspired me greatly. I enjoyed watching you
everyday in right field dreaming to be like you someday. You have inspired me
as a player and as a role model for others. Any person who has the work
ethic you have is going to have success. I am thankful for all of the
memories you have given me. I remember your face while standing along the
railing of the dugout after Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. I was so upset
because I wanted the Yankees to win the series, but I also wanted you to end
your career with a world series victory. You are a "Warrior" and a role
model to me and everyone around you. It is also great to see your face on
the YES Network. Thank you and God Bless You.
