Ever since I was four years old, I have been a huge Yankees fan. I remember
watching the Yankees lose to the Mariners in 1995, which was the first time
II had ever stayed up to watch a Yankees game. I went to my first game in
the 1994 season, and it was great. I have been going to Yankees games 2-3
times a season, and this is the first season I haven't seen you out there,
trying your best to win the game. I went to the 1996 ALCS Game 4, and I
remember that you played a great game and hit a home-run. I also went to
Game 2 of the 1996 World Series, and even though you got shutout by Greg
Maddux, you were out there fighting for the game, never giving up hope. My
older brother (now 15) started to tell me about you in 1997, and ever since
then, I have been a huge fan of you. I still remember when you tried to
catch Sandy Alomar's home-run, and seeing how disappointed you were when you
could'nt reach because it was hit to far back. I remember the amazing catch
you made in the 1998 World Series, to robthe Padres of a home-run. I
remember how you broke your rib, and Joe Torre let you become manager for a
day. I remember how you set the stage for Tino Martinez's game tying homer
in Game 5. I cried when I heard the fans cheering your name in unison in
Game 5. I hope you will comeback someday to be a part of the Yankees again,
as a coach, a broadcaster, or even the owner. Thank you Paulie, for all you
have done, and for being a great role model for me. I miss you Paulie,
please come back.

This team just doesnt have the same feel without Paul grazing the
rightfield grass. I have been to a few games this year and it just doesnt
have the same feeling. I know at some point everyone must "call it quits"
but I find myself wishing that we had won Game 7 so I and the other 55,000
faithful could see #21 in Rightfield for a just a little longer.

Mr. O'Neill i am the biggest fan of yours i never got to see you when you
when you where on the reds because i was to young. I wish that you wouldn't
of retired because i knew that you were the best. Just cause griffey hits
homeruns and jeter and chipper are good short stops. They all play for the
money. You, you are hardcore you play for the game the love and heart of
the game. I have always wanted to see you play but being in GA it is kind
of hard. You were and still are and always will be great. The babe he was
awsome then you came around and then you were my idol. I love baseball. I
wish that people could play it for fun. Like you do. I think you are
stupendous. I have almost all of your baseball cards. I need 4 more reds
cards and 3 more yankee cards. I am ordering your jersey from the all-star
game and a yankee hat with your number on it i am to belive that i am your
biggest fan. You are my hero next to my dad in kuwait.

You have been my all time best Yankee player. Watching the games this
year are not the same, not seeing you in right field and at bat. Is there
any way I can get the navy blue Paul O'neill tee shirt that I ruined that
was my son's. I have been trying to replace it but, can't come with a
source to buy it. Can you help me on this info. love and miss seeing you on the field.

Just wanted to say I think you were a wonderful Yankee, with so much drive
and determination. If the Yankees were up 10-0, or if they were down 13-1,
you still had that same motivation when you were up batting or in right
field. I loved seeing you play, and I am sooooo glad that you are a
broadscaster for the YES Network now! The only problem is, in Bayonne we
have Cablevision...as you probably know, Cablevision and YES are in a
deadlock, which means I can't see you...I am getting DirecTV on Saturday
6/8/02, and you are one of the primary reasons! I hope you become a coach or
manager for the Yankees someday. Say hello to your wife and kids for me.
Your kids have a gifted father, and I hope one of them knows baseball, so
there will be another "O'Neill" in the Yankees someday! I miss you playing
Paul. It isn't the same without you.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A YANKEE FAN AND SO WHEN YOU JOINED THE TEAM I SINGLED
YOU OUT AS MY FAVORITE. MY HUSBAND AND I HAD A THING GOING ABOUT YOU-HE
WOULD COMMENT WHEN YOU STRUCK OUT ETC. JUST TO GET A RISE OUT OF ME. HE WAS
TALL AND LANKY LIKE YOU AND LIVED TO PLAY BASEBALL. HE WOULD PLAY WHEREVER
THERE WAS A GAME UNTIL HE WAS WELL INTO HIS 50'S. HE GREW UP WITH GEORGE
"SNUFFY" STIRNWEISS AND IT BROKE HIS HEART WHEN HIS FRIEND MADE THE YANKEE
TEAM. I JUST SAW YOU ON YES BEING INTERVIEWED AND ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. MUCH AS
I MISS YOU PLAYING, YOUR DECISION TO QUIT AND SPEND TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY
WAS A SOUND ONE. GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE AND THANKS FOR THE MANY HOURS I
ENJOYED WATCHING YOU PLAY WITH MY FAVORITE TEAM.

I can only say that Paul Oneil is a true inspiration. He has helped me
realize that no matter how hard it is, sometimes you just have to suck it up
and go through it, I also hope he realizes how much all of us Yankee fans
appreciated that attitude.

Me being a huge yankee fan and living around yankee fans I still think you

I have been a yankee fan since the late fifties. For what it's worth, you
have been one of my favorite yankees. Although there are no words to
describe how important you have been to the team and the fans, I think it is
safe to say that of all the "modern era" yankees, you are the one who the
babe, the mick, whitey, joe d., yogi and the iron horse would have welcomed
as their teammate. Now, you are showing another side on YES. Even here, you are a great
yankee. For the record Paul, I was very excited about the trade that brought
you to New York. Some questioned my enthusiasm. I can't tell you how
fulfilling it is to know that I was never more right about anything in my
life. Thanks for everything. I have a feeling that in the very near future,,
there will be a plaque with #21 in monument park. Where it truly belongs.

Hey Paul! I'm 17 years old, and have been a Yankee fan ever since I could
grasp the concept of baseball (it wasn't hard with a whole house of baseball
fans). I just wanted to let you know, even though I'm not exactly sure that
you'll being the one reading this, that you are my biggest inspiration, my
idol and my hero. Your determination and the way that you always stuck to
the game really inspires me. The way you fought when you knew you were
right made you the greatest warrior in my eyes, and never once did I ever
see you give up. I would never give up in my life, because I know that you
stuck it out on the field and played with your heart and soul. I took your
love for the game as a lesson and I apply it to my world today. I never got
to meet you out of the many times I got to watch you play, but just being in
your presence was always a thrilling experience. Now that I sound like a
complete mush, I think I'll stop :) Just wanted to let you know that you
really touched my life, even though you didn't know me. And who knows, even
though I'm a girl maybe I could become a Yankee one day. (Id like to see
that happen! Heehee)

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that baseball will never be the same
without you. I can remember in '94 I watched to greatest run for AL batting
champion i have ever seen. The guy that I work for is a big time Mets fan,
but even he has a lucky Paul O'Neill. I cant wait until i can see you in
Cooperstown in 5 years because that's as long as it is going to take for you
to get there.

Back in 1978 when I was a small boy around the age of 10, I was a big fan of Nettles, and Guidry. After that era was over, I stopped watching the
Yankees...until...1994 when I decided to check out a game, and a player
named Paul O'neill was up at bat! I was amazed at his spirit and intensity!
Ever since then I have missed only a handful of Yankee games and have been
inspired by Paul O'neill's will to win! Thanks for all the great baseball moments, and the inspiration!!

Growing up in a Yankee household, we all had our favorites from season to
season, with always one dominant constant. For my early years it was Greg
Nettles. Over the past several years however, Paul has taken that top,
permanent slot. Paul's relentless pursuit of perfection had grabbed my interest in 1996. I
played softball growing up. Most players strive to play an infield position.
I was the only one who wanted to play in the outfield, specifically
rightfield. Through that experience, and continuing it, I have been
completely drawn to Paul. We both play in right, both left-handed, and
frankly, both extremely beautiful people (!).I value Paul as a player and as
an individual. There has never been another player, in baseball or another, that I have
felt to have such a strong presence for a team through leadership,
intensity, and role modeling. Being a Youth Program Director for a YMCA, it is hard to show kids that
individual talent only takes you so far. In an era of multi-million dollar
contracts, endorsements, and players not owning up to their responsibility
to be well-mannered influences on the youth, Paul certainly proved that
there are classy guys just out there to play the game and to win for the
sake of the TEAM. I wish Paul, and his family, all the good luck and fortunes a person can
give. And I look forward to the day, when all Paul's fans can see him in the
Yankee pin stripes again.

I got to go to a Yankee game on May 16 and I missed watching you in right field. I think you are a great person and baseball player. Thank you
for always being positive. I have to do a report for my 4th grade class on someone who I admire and
I choose you to do my report on. I was wondering if there are any good books
about your life? I need to do this report by the beginning of June. Please
write back soon. Still your biggest fan in all of the world.... Nicholas PS. I am turning 10 on May 26 and I am asking for Yankee tickets to go to one of the games. I am also saving my money that I earn for during chores
around my house to buy a picture of you.

I just wanted to say that going to the stadium will no longer be the same knowing that there is a hole in right field. You were and will always be my
absolute favorite player. I was always a Yankee fan but I didn't get into
watching the games until 1996 and I didn't really watch at first because I
wanted to see the game. But I watched the games to see you play. You were
my favorite player from the start. Not many players can compare to you. I
used to love to see you get angry after you struck out and curse up a storm
in the dugout. I remember reading an article in the paper about your son
throwing the bat in a little league game after he struck out and your wife
asked you to talk to him but you couldn't because you knew where he got it
from. You were the heart of the Yankees. It was sad to see you go but
nothing lasts forever. But I hope that you earn your rightful place in the
hall of fame. You will always be loved by New York. I'm sure i'm not the
only one that wishes that you can come back as not only an announcer but as
a coach. I hope you enjoy your retirement and enjoy spending more time with
your family. You will always be #21.

Thank you for a lot of wonderful baseball memories and thanks for your contributions to the game.

Is Paul going to be participating in the Old Timer's Day ceremonies at Yankee Stadium on July 6th? I have tickets, and I'm sure hoping he'll be there. I get goosebumps just thinking of the moment when he's announced. I've been a fan of his since the 1990 Reds championship team, and was thrilled when he came to the Yanks. Thurman Munson is my all-time favorite Yankee, but Paul is a very, very close second. Thanks to him for the years of hard work, and thanks especially to his family for being so strong & supportive. God bless!

When I first began watching the Yankees, I was about seven. It wasn't very
difficult to find a favorite. When I saw your determination, competitive
spirit, and self-contempt everytime you believed you had failed, I felt a
bond with you, as if we were kindred spirits. Around the same time I began watching baseball, I began playing it as well. I felt just as I imagine you did. If I got out when my team really
needed me, I felt let tearing my hair out--I just couldn't resist the urge
of slamming the bat down and marching off to sit on the bench, alone, apart
from my teammates, disgusted with myself. You truly inspired me. Now when I play baseball, I never give up. I get up to bat, afraid of the pitcher that I just struck out to my last two at-bats.
But then I think of you, and how my teammates need me. Then the fear
dissipates, and the hit that I had failed to attain the last two at-bats
finally comes. My brother would like to thank you for the time that he ran under the
fence and passed the security guards outside Yankee stadium with paper and
pen in hand to get your auto-graph, and you gave it to him. Email me if you ever have the time. I have so much I want to ask you. I've never told anyone that I've always had a dream to play baseball on the
Yankees. But, I chickened out of trying out for my highschool's team (I'm a
freshman). Well, thanks again for giving me hero to look up to.

I went to my first major league baseball game in 1992. I rooted for my
Paulie though my best friends mom booed him. She is still a Reds fan (go
figure). When Paul was traded to the Yankees, I was so excited. I began to
follow the game a little more than I had before. Most people would say I'm
a Paul O'Neill nut. I don't really care. I went to Jacobs Field in full
Yankee gear. Head to Toe. Did I get booed? Yes. Did I care? No. Did I
yell for Paulie? Yes I did. As loud as I possibly could. Did I run for my
life when it was time to leave? Yes. We Yankee fans are smart. I just want
to say how much I love Paulie and how much I miss him. I'm glad I still get

Paul: I've been a devoted Yankees fan since 1957. Back then, a guy named Mantle was the soul of the team. Then a few years later, there was Munson. In the 80's, Don Mattingly led the way. The Yankees of '96 to the present are the best team I've seen since I was a kid, maybe in some ways even better than those Yankees. And there is no doubt in my mind that you were the heart and soul of those great teams these past few years. I enjoyed watching you play as much as I've ever enjoyed anybody, and the critical importance of your presence on the field was always obvious. On a personal level, I also want you to know that you offered a rare example to my kids of what a professional athlete should and can be. The Yanks won't be the same without you, but the world moves on and so must we. For all you gave to your team and to us, the fans, I thank you. Wherever your life takes you from here, know that there are many, many of us who wish you the very best of everything. I can think of few people who deserve it more. Thanks again, and God bless.

We all enjoyed watching you here in Billings, MT during your first season
in minor league baseball. Although sad to see you retire, we're all proud
of your illustrious career and wish you the best in retirement! If you get
a chance, it would be great if you could travel out here to watch a Billings
Mustangs game or two. Cobb Field has a changed a little bit, but not too
much since you were here in 1981. You're always welcome here in Billings!

Hey Paulie, just wanted to let you know that you will be surely missed by
many a Yankee fan. I've been a Yankee fan my whole life and it has been a
pleasure watching you as the heart and soul of this team for many years.
I've been through the bad and good times with this team and the teams i've
seen the last 8 years have brought me much joy. Thanks for leaving it all
out on the field, and thanks for all the memories. You are a warrior and a
legend and don't worry, 21 will be a retired number out there on the walls
of the stadium.

Just wanted to wish you a very relaxing retirement. I really wish you
were going to play this year but that's okay, you deserve to retire. You
have accomplished so much during your many great years in MLB. I am
however, partial to your years spent as a Red. We once went to game at then
"Riverfront Stadium" and saw you during batting practice. You threw a ball
all the way to the red seats and I looked forever until I found that ball!
Years later, my Dad got you to sign it at RedsFest! I have to find a new
"favorite player" and that will be hard. Before you, I liked Buddy Bell a
lot. Now, I cannot even think of someone I could like as much as I liked
you. Maybe Craig Biggio? Hey, what do you think about Rijo making his
return? How incredible! Lots of luck Paul, to you and your family!

Dear Paulie, I am writing for the 2nd time
in about 2 weeks. Last Sunday 4-14-02 my Mom had a stroke. She's doing
better now. However I believe that is do in part to you. See what happened
was the hospital she is in had no beds available so she was in the ER for 2
days, but she had the YES chanell and she saw you broadcasting the game. My
sister and brother and I were in the room with her. When my sister and
brother would start to talk my Mom and I would sayh "shush". She turned 79
on 4-17-02 and is in the rehab section of the hospital but to see you(her
favorite Yankee along with Don Mattingly)and the rest of the team has lifted
her spirits. Thank you always for being a part of our family @ least that is
how we feel.

Dear Paul, when I was a child in the mid 1970's, I began following the
Yankees. My favorite player at that time was a fellow by the name of Graig
Nettles. Night after night in the summers of my youth I would sit eagerly in
front of a small black and white T.V., anticipating every ball to be hit at
Nettles and counting the innings to his next at bat. I cried when he failed
and rejoiced when he succeded, only as a boy can when he is watching his
hero. In the mornings I would run out of my house with my number 9 jersey
and try to create my own heroics on the field or in the school yard. Those
were special times in my life. When the Yankees got you from the Reds my
cousin called (he's a life long Reds fan) and told me how much I was going
to like your fiery play and your shot gun arm (I actually had a pretty good
arm myself). At that time I had still loved my Yankees but my passion for
the club had wained with time. I want to thank you from the bottom of my
heart. Let me tell you why. I really did not belive I could ever feel about
baseball the way I had when I was a boy. I figured thats just the way it is
as time passes by. But watching you play these past several years made me
remember what it was like to be a child again, if only for brief moments. I
laughed and cheered when you when you suceeded. I lamented when you failed.
And one time I even cried, even though you and team won. But no matter the
out come, I was always looking forward to the next game, and your next at
bat. Thanks Paul, for your shotgun arm, your rocket line drives, and
impeccable glove. You not only became my all time favorite player, but my
daughter Melissa's as well. She has great memories. Your friend, Eric Della
Bartolmea. P.S.- Thanks for putting your head down when ever you hit a home
run. Man, I loved that.

I am writing to thank you for so many wonderfull memories. Not only of

devestated that you are not playing this year. She reads everything she can
about you. We watched your Yankeeogrophy which I taped for her last nite and
she actually cried. Thanks Paul for all you have been to baseball, the

I started as a serious baseball fan about five years ago and if it weren't
for you I don't think I would have become the fan I am today. I followed
the Yankees yes, but you were the player that made me want to tune in day
after day, week after week, spring training after spring training. This
year hasn't been the same, spring training seemed lonely, my first home game
seemed empty, but all in all, I loved every minute! I thank you for your
part in teaching me what it really means to be a fan. You are my Babe Ruth
and years from now, (God willing), my grandkids will be sporting the Yankee
Jersey with #21 on there backs and my stories of all the joy and excitement
that I have expirienced. I look forward to watching you on the YES Network, I know that you will be
great.

I have lived in New York for my whole 35 years in life. One thing I know
I love baseball and love the Yankees. I can say I have been to about 5 - 10
home games a year, which is hard in my business to get away from work
managing a car dealership. I want to say I will miss you. I do not feel
anyone they put in your position can take your place. I do not know anyone
with the determination, love and dedication to be the best at what you do as
you have shown every day in a Yankee uniform. I only wish that my
> employees displayed the same pursuit to perfection as your love for
baseball and to be the best. You will be truly missed and I hope that one
day I have the pleasure to meet you and to tell you in person. I purchased
a bat from your websight last year and it will never leave my wall. I
proudly display it as I have a piece of Paul O'Neill history on my wall.
Thank you for the memories.

I'm twelve years old, and I've been a Yankee fan all my life. I'm one
of the only girls in a huge family of boys, but oddly, I'm the biggest
sports fan of all of us - at least I like to think so. Baseball has run in
the family though, a love for the game has been in our blood - it's a part
of who I am. However, I was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called marfan
syndrome - which I had never previously heard of. To attempt to make a very
long story shorter, I'm not allowed to play sports because I need to keep my
heart rate down. I was crushed, it was the week of girls' softball tryouts
and everyone assumed I'd make a great addition to the team. For a while,
just the word "baseball" made me angry because I started to get angry at
others who had the option to play sports while I didn't. Over time, though I
not only realized how lucky I am to have what I have, I also fell in love
with baseball all over again - and I owe that to you. Watching you play gave
me someone to root for, and being as big a fan as I am gave me the
opportunity to still take part in the game in my own way. So, in other
words, thank you Mr. O'Neill, you might have retired from playing baseball,
but you've given all of us a love for the game - good luck in all you do,
and I'll keep you in my thoughts during this upcoming baseball season. Your biggest fan, Alyssa

awkward not seeing you in right field. You've made many accomplishments on
the Yanks while you were there. As one of your fans, I'd like to see your
number retired...it would be wrong for another baseball player to recieve
"21". I hope you stay active in baseball in as many ways as possible - not

I never liked baseball. Didn't understand it. Had no desire to. Then
the Reds went to the World Series and I became a Paul O'Neill fan. In my
senior year the Reds traded my dear Paulie to the Yankees and my life
changed forever. I watched every game I could (they don't show the Yankees
alot, this is Indians country). In 1998 I met Paulie and in 1999 I went to
my first game in Yankee stadium. WOW! In 2000 I got booed at Jacobs Field
because I rooted for My Paulie and My Yankees. Of course we won. It was
all worth it. So to you, Paul I say thank you for introducing me to the
most amazing game on earth and for allowing me to expierence the game
through you. Best of luck with your retirement you deserve the time off.

Paul, You will forever be mentioned with the great Yankees of the past,
present and future. Right field will cast a shadow for a long time to come.
Your intensity mirrors Pete Rose's and Ty Cobb's. You have great respect for
the game and it showed everytime you hit a homer and put your head down.
I'll remember you for the clutch hitting and your relentless drive for
winning. That slide into second base in '97, pure Paulie! My two favorite
Yanks in my lifetime are Don Mattingly and you. Thanks for the memories.

Hey Paulie. I just watched the season opener yesterday. It was really
weird. They showed the staring roster and it finally hit me. No Tino,
scooping up all the balls in the dirt over at first. No Brosius making the
bare-handed plays over at third. No Knobbie in left. And of course, no O
Neill. No more home-runs at the perfect times. No More great plays in the
feild. I'm sure Spencer will do a good job, but it's just not the same
without you Paulie.

player, both on and off the field. Thank you!!
