Paul, I just wanted to tell you how weird it is approaching a new baseball
season with you retired. I just wonder how I'll follow the game now. I
hope you always find a way to stay active in baseball; it is in your blood.
I'm also very glad to see that you're in the process of writing a book.
I'll be very interested in reading it when it comes out. If you need any
help with it (from the Columbus/Brookhaven end), please let me know. I
already have my tickets for the "Paul O'Neill Bobble-Head Doll Night" at the
Clippers game on July 28th. I hope you'll be able to attend the game in
person. Take care and my best to all your family!

I want to tell you Paulie that we miss you and that I want to thank you for all your efforts with the team. I enjoyed watching you play and I still think that you had at least two more years in you. I wish you the best for the years to come and hopefully you decide to come out of retirement soon.

I just want to say how much I will miss watching you play this season. I
love how you talked/yelled at yourself while playing. I do the same thing,
so it was nice seeing someone as great as you doing the same. I was
wondering how you felt about Giambi being a Yankee. I don't like it, and I
have a Yankee website, and we don't like that move. We all love Tino,
though. Steinbrenner compared Giambi to you, and I think that it was wrong.
There is no comparison. You are in a completely different league from
Giambi. He can only aspire to your greatness. Take care and God bless!

As a die hard Yankee fan,I'd just like to say thanks for all the great
memories you've give us fans the past 9 years. It has been a true honor to
watch you play, you are a class act and will never be forgotten. You always
gave it your all and always wanted to win,not to mention a great teammate in the clubhouse. There's no doubt in my mind..you were the heart & soul of the Yanks the
past 9 seasons, and to not see you in right field come opening day 2002 will
be a tough one to swallow. You're the best Paulie..I wish you & your family
the best of luck & happiness in years to come..and one day we'll see that #21 in monument park where it belongs! Thanks again Paul..and take care!!!

Dear Mr. O'Neill, My name is Mike,I am 11years old. I always loved to watch you play. You always toughed it out, no matter what. People told me that you were a baby because of the way you acted after you got out. This always upset me because they don't know the whole story, but neither do I. But in my opinion, you just cared about your at-bats more than anyone else. I think it is great that you are going to be an anouncer, but I think you should be a manager! I won't say I'm your #1 fan, because that is what everyone says, I didn't Idolize my room to you or the Yankees. This may be because I
don't have enough money, but Paulie, Thank you! Thankyou for giving me such great memories, I will miss you on the field!

Just heard the news today, oh boy!!! I am so happy to hear that you
will be working with YES. I know you have many fans but just want you to know that I was never a
fan of baseball until several years ago when I caught a Yankee game and was
blown away by the way you played. Very few players show the dedication and
love on the field. Because of you and players like Joe Girardi (who I miss),
Tino and Scott I became a Yankee fan. But you will forever remain my
favorite. I look forward to seeing you on TV. I hope the new yankee team can
live up to the Yankee mystic. So far I am not impressed.

Mr. O'Neill you are my favorite player ever!! I almost cryed that last day
at Yankee Stadium. I am trying to get number 21 for my baseball uniform. I
play right field just like you. Though I am a righty I try to base my swing
on yours. Well, I hope you have a fun life off the field.

When you first joined the Yankees I saw the intensity that you played with
all the time. I said to my daughter at that time,"Nicole, see how hard this
man works? Work this hard and you go far in life." Today Nicole is a 3rd
year Ph.D. student in Biochemistry as a medical researcher. Your lesson you
offer kids to work hard pays off in ways you don't even know!

EVERY YANKEE GAME I WENT TO FOR EVERY SINGLE INNING WITHOUT FAIL I WOULD STAND RIGHT ABOVE THE WALL IN RIGHT FIELD AND YELL "PAULIE DOUGH" (THAT IS MY NICKNAME FOR PAUL). THIS WAS NOT EASY TO DO BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE TO CLIMB OVER THE ROPE (MANAGE TO GET IN GOOD WITH THE SECURITY GUARD OF COURSE) I WOULD ONLY BE ALLOWED TO DO IT WHILE PAUL WAS WARMING UP. PAUL WOULD WAVE (MAYBE NOT EVERY INNING) HE WOULD KNOW WITH MY LOUD MOUTH THAT I WAS THERE. ONE GAME IT WAS THE EIGHT INNING I'M YELLING MY USUAL "PAULIE DOUGH" AND ALL OF SUDDEN PAUL GOT THE BALL BACK FROM BERNIE AND THREW IT TO ME. IT WAS A GREAT THROUGH OF COURSE I WAS JUST SO NERVOUS THAT IT HIT MY PALM AND THEN THE GROUND. WELL FANS WENT RUNNING FOR IT AND I DOVE TOO. THE SECURITY GUARD PICKED IT UP AND SAID (TO THE FANS) "NO WAY PAUL THREW THIS TO HER" AND GAVE IT TO ME. IT WAS THE COOLEST THING HOW HE ACKNOWLEDGED ME ALL THE TIME WITH A WAVE BUT THAT TIME WAS THE BEST. I HAVE TRIED LIKE CRAZY (NO PUN INTENDED) (OF COURSE, PAUL) TO GET THAT BALL SIGNED, BUT HAVE FAILED. THAT'S OKAY THOUGH THAT BALL WILL ALWAYS HAVE SPECIAL MEMORIES FOR ME TO HAVE AND SHARE. PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT PAUL IS NOT THAT SOCIABLE AND FAN FRIENDLY BUT I HAVE THAT STORY AS MY DEFENSE BUT THEY CAN NEVER SAY THAT PAUL DOES NOT HAVE HEART FOR THE GAME. THANKS FOR LISTENING (READING)

It'll be so strange not to see you on the field anymore. I'm gonna miss
the fiery attitude and the clutch hitting and defense that you provided.
However, I'm thrilled that you will be broadcasting some games for the
Yankees. I am attending college for sports broadcasting, and I couldn't
help but think what a thrill it would be to broadcasting a game with a
player that I have always wanted to meet. It's amazing! Hopefully, I'll
see you at the ballpark some day!

Normally, I'm jumping up and down with joy at this time of the year
knowing that Opening Day is just around the corner. This year, however, I'm
excited, but I'm also sad. My two favorite players are no longer on the
team. It's going to take some time for me to get used to new players in
right field and at first base. My heart is broken! No one will ever
replace you or Tino in my eyes. I know life goes on, but when I look at
first base or in right field, I will still see Nos. 24 and 21!!!!!! I wish
you the best of luck and happiness. Thank you for all the talent, joy and
excitement you have provided Yankee fans with during your career. You truly
are a class act ballplayer and all-around great guy, and you will be sorely
missed and forever in our hearts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ever. I also want to say that i went to the same school as your children. I
also used to know your son Aaron. Him me and a couple of my friends played

Yankee raffle. I thought that was very kind of you. Well the last thing that
I want to say is that in my heart you will always be a Yankee, and that will

Hi, I am sitting with my friend Steph right next to me and I signed on
this site about 30min. ago I wantd to look at this because Paul O'Neill is
my favorite Yankee! My dad got me ticketrs just to see you play and I had a
seat right by you well my cousin, Eric, called me and told me that you hurt
your leg! I did not belive him at the time then I turned on the news and it
said you would be sitting out a few games I locked myself in the bathroom
and cried for 2 hours! The reason I cried was because I was going to be
right next to you and Shane Spencer was there instead of you! I was so mad!
My dad tried to get world seris tickets but he was to slow!!!! My room is not Yankees but I have an intire wall full of just Paul stuff
placts and the rest are newspaper articles and then pictures from this site!
All my friends think I am so werid because Derek Jeter is the best he is
cute and can play ball well I want to let everyone no that Paul is my ideal
and he is #1 and can play ball so great!! Better then anyone!!!
Paul I am so mad that you left the NEW YORK YANKEES and even if anyone
takes your number I will be there with YOUR jersey on and good luck with
anything you do! I saw ad in the newspaper with you and your son Aaron cleaning out your
locker I cried so much and that was just becuase you were cleaning out your
locker now that you left me and my friends , Steph, can fill up her pool
when it is empty!!! WE LOVE YOU PAUL!!!!

Hello Paul. You have been my favorite baseball for it seems like forever
now(I just turned 14 so forever is not that long)...and one of my dreams was
about to come true a few weeks back. I was supposed to meet you at an
autograph session in NY...but 2 days before that I got sick with a 106
degree fever, so I wasnt able to go...which made my week from being bad to
being one of the worst weeks of my life. So I hope to see you around NJ/NY
again soon. Thanks for everything Paulie!

been very kind to sign for me however at the last set of Tampa games I was
hoping to get a picture with you and when you signed my poster I was to
nervous to ask. I was recently in NY, my mom needed to have surgery, and
found out you had just been at the mall near her home. Another missed
opportunity. I'm hoping to see you at spring training next month, I have
season tickets and maybe now that you are retired you have more time to chat
and maybe take a picture. Hoping you are enjoing time with your family and
relaxing (playing drums or tennis)! ME :)

There's way too much to say in this guest book. There are not words to
express the joy I've felt for you during your career, living out your dream.
I've seen you play all over the country. For reasons you can probably
understand, I always hoped you knew how deeply I cared about your success. I recently reconnected with Butch and we had fun talking over old times together. Anyway, I should be down at spring training at some point and would love to get together, chat and have a brew or two. You now have my e-mail address, please get in touch if you'd like to get together. I think we would have a lot to catch up on. And we can share our stories about experiencing the fantasy of meeting Mick Jagger! Hope to hear from you. Best to you and your family.

Growing up in a state with NO major league baseball team was tough, but knowing that the greatest team in the history of the game was right
across the Hudson River made my life a whole lot better. I have loved the
Yankees more than I've loved anything else. I wrote my college essay on how
the 1999 Yankees changed my life, and I just finished writing a speech on you,
Paul, for my Oral Communication class here at college. I have not only had
the biggest crush on you for the longest time, but I also admire you more
than you will ever know. My room at home in high school was covered from
wall to wall with Yankees pictures, and there was a special "Paul Wall" at one
end. The aggression that you had when you played and the amazing stats that
you put up on the board has truly made you a living legend. I cried the
night you said good bye and I will cry on Opening Day at Yankee Stadium when
I don't see you come out of the dugout. You will forever be a role model
to me and I will be telling my grandkids exactly who was the driving force
in my life to never let adversity stand in my way to success. Thank you Paul
and watch out because I have made it my goal before I graduate college to
meet you and personally get your autograph! lol Thanks for the memories!!!!!

The yankees have been around for over many years they won so many
world series there are only a few players that captered my heart when i
started watching the yankees it was a day I'll never forget my aunt sandy Webb
set me down and told me to watch this game and i started watching it and
saw this one guy that looked very nice standing there at bat and i said
aunt sandy who is that guy that takes his anger out on the bat and she said that's Paul O'neill and every since then you have been my role model and i want to thank you for that and tell you that i love the way you play the game.

Just wanted to drop another line to say was I disappointed that the Yankees lost the 200l series? Yes. Upset? No. What upset me most was knowing that I won't be seeing you in right field anymore. There will always be another series but there will always be only one you. If I could
influence the Yankee powers that be then I would make sure they sent you an e-mail with just three words "BABY COME BACK"! Of course the figures for a nice salary would be included even though that is not what you are about. That's another reason you are special. For you it was the love of the game not the mega bucks and in my opinion the Yankees got away cheap when they got
you. Take good care of yourself. You are and always be my favorite player no matter who they put in right field.

I had the great pleasure of meeting you Sun., Jan. 27 at the Palisades Center Mall. I waited on line for three hours. I met a lot of new friends standing in line all that time. It was a pleasure because we were all such fans of yours. Every time someone came out from just meeting you, they would all say how friendly and nice you are. How much time you took with them. You even posed for pictures. Well, three hours later, when it was finally my turn, I did not expect you to have half the energy and composure you had when you began. You were great!!! You thanked us for waiting so long, you posed for pictures with us, shook all of our hands. You are a real class act! Everyone in our group had so much fun, we plan on doing it again. It was worth the wait!! Thanks for being you.

Hey Paul!! I'm 17, and I recently met you at Roosevelt Field Mall
in Long Island. (Jan.26th) You were very nice to your fans. I wish you weren't rushed so much by all those agents. However, I have a nice picture now with my favorite player's autograph. You always did a great job on the field. Congrats on your retirement. I'll miss you!

I just wanted to say that I will truly miss you this upcoming season. I am a die hard Yankee fan but also you have been my favorite ever since I saw you play. You always showed so much heart and soul in every game you played. You showed me what it was like to truly enjoy something and to always try to do your best. I want to thank you for Saturday at Roosevelt Field when I got to have my picture taken with you holding my license plate that read "21 Fan" It was an honor to meet you and for you to sign that and show appreciation regarding my plate. I drive my car proudly showing that #21 will always be remembered proudly. I look forward to hearing you on the YES station. Thanks for the wonderful memories!

I want to thank you for giving me back my love for baseball. I grew
up in a house the youngest of four with two older brothers. My brothers and
my father were really baseball fans, so I was too. My earliest memory is sitting on my mother lap at one of my oldest brother's Babe Ruth Baseball games that my father was coaching. we watched games and went to many games also -- they were Mets games....my father was a fan of theirs, sorry. Anyway, through the years, no matter what we always had baseball to
enjoy together. After he died in 1987, I kinda stayed away from baseball, I
guess it reminded me of my Dad, and sometime that made me sad. A few years
ago, I started watching baseball again with my boyfriend and his young son.
His son, Sam, is a Yankees fan, but Ben, my boyfriend, is a Mets fan.....but I still love him. Watching you play with such passion and enjoyment for the game revived my love for baseball. Even when you lose your temper, I still cheered you, I understand an Irish temper when I see one. It's great entertainment and has even helped me bond with Sam. This past summer I helped Ben coach Sam's Little League team, we had a great time. So once again, THANK YOU for all your years of playing, dedication, and appeciation of the game you have given us. I will always be grateful for the reminder of the times spent with my Dad watching games. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE MEMORIES.

I want to thank you for your many years of entertaining baseball.
You've always been one of my favorites (besides Eric Davis). I'm a lifetime
Red's fan originally from northern Kentucky and, as you probably know, there's not much to do there but watch the Red's and the UK Wildcats. It gave me goosebumps when the fans started chanting your name in the outfield. It was nice to see the New Yorkers took you in as one of
their own, I'm sure it's hard to win them over. I just wanted you to know that there are people who still remember the good old days. Take care of yourself and enjoy your retirement! P.S. I'm sure the water coolers will thank you as well.

My husband and I are BIG Yankees Fans. We especially are fans of
yours. We had the oppurtunity to meet you this past week end at the Hall Of
Heroes. As we waited anxiously to meet you, we struck up conversations with
other fans of yours. You will be happy to know that your fans love you and
will miss you on the field. Just about everyone we spoke with admired your determination as a player and as role model for kids. We brought along our nephew Scott to meet you also who is also a Yankees fan. I was so happy that I was able to get a photo with you as you signed my Paul O'Neill jersey. I beleive your brother Robert was the person who offered to take the
picture for me. Thank him for me. As we left the Hall of Heroes, fans still
waiting on line asked us how it was to meet you. It was wonderful we told
them. People were glad to hear that but not surprised as they knew you would
be nothing else but sincere with your fans. Paul we look forward to seeing you in the broadcast booth with the YES network and hopefully return to the Yankees as a coach and hopefully a future manager. After all Joe has to retire someday! Good Luck with your future Paul! We will miss seeing #21 on the playing field.

I have been following your career for so long, I just wanted to drop you a note and let you know that it was great to finally meet you at your recent autograph signing at the Hall of Heros in Garden City NY. You were so pleasant and honestly one of the nicest players I have ever met at one of these signings, putting all your heart into everything you do. You will always be my favorite player, and played the game with full passion and drive everyday. I suppose you will be at Yankee Stadium the day they retire your number 21, as they should, along with other great players of the game. I will miss seeing you play, but look forward to seeing you broadcast
the Yankee games for YES network. Please do more autograph shows, I'll be first in line.. I'd love to see you again.

I was part of the 56,000 fans who chanted your name in the eighth inning of game 5 of the world series, what a moment. I am a world trade center survivor and was going through some rough times, but that night i got to share a special moment at yankee stadium, with my little
brother, and for those 3 hours all my thoughts were ones of happiness. I would like to thank you and the yankees for giving myself and new york a great season, great memories, and one heck of a game. thanks, good luck

Hi Paul, I just wanted to say I will miss not seeing you in rightfield this
year. I got the chance to see you play at Yankee Stadium in 1998. My then
future son-in-law knew you are my favorite player and got tickets right
behind you. As far as I'm concerned you were the heart of the Yankees. You always played with passion and gave more then 100% each at bat. While some may have viewed your throwing a bat or your hat as not right to me it just showed how passionate you were about the game. I only got to see you play that one time but I watched every game on TV. I will miss you and wish you and your family all the best in the years to come. Take care of yourself and always remember how special you are as a former player (boy you sure showed Lou Pinella how wrong he was) and as a
person. Thank you for the years I was able to watch you play.

Paulie... There have been other Yankees who have had monster careers, those with retired numbers, and those with flashier stats, but NO ONE that has
put on the pinstripes has played with more HEART and PASSION than you. You epitomize the hard nose work ethic that we would like to see in ALL of today's pampered athletes. Everyone will look back to the "glory days" of the late '90's and the turn of the century... The GUTS, the heart, soul, and professionalism of those glory years will be defined by one name... PAULIE! Good luck in your new endeavors. Knock 'em dead in the broadcast booth!

say to you that in 1998 I got the chance to see you play in a game for the
first time live in Montreal. I was that annoying kid in the back of you
while you were in the field. This was the same day that Brosius had 3
homeruns and Bernie had one too. To you Paul O'neill you gave me more than
just a game to watch, you gave me your all. God bless you Paul O'neill you still are in my heart, and you will always be to me a true Champion!!!

Dear Paul,I'm not really looking forward to the start of the 2002 baseball
season-without you in right field. I've followed your career since you came
up in Cincinnati. I'm a player kind of fan, rooting more for an individual
than a team. Pete Rose, Jim Palmer, Brad Park, Vinny Testaverde are a few
I've followed-so you're in special company in my mind. Thanks Paul, for all
the thrills you've given us over the years, and all the best to you and your

As a fellow drummer, is there any way I can access some of your percussion
work? I've been playing for about 30 years now. Drums are the foundation
for all music, and I'll draw an analogy here of the foundation you provided
for the Yanks and their fans for the past 9 years. Although you were
sometimes a little too hard on yourself, I always appreciated your
warrior-like demeanor. Why was "Baba O'Riley" your signature tune? I forget the name, but
someone (David Robbins?)wrote a phenomenal biography of Keith Moon. Moonie
was a REAL character. Great read if you have time in your retirement(!). We'll miss you, and thanks again for the terrific memories. You were a constant.

I would to thank paul for what he did one day outside of yankee stadium. My son & I were outside the press gate waiting for all players to come out after the game. My son Daniel is 5 years old was holding a baseball hoping to get anyone's autograph. Just as The yankees started coming out my son dropped his ball and it rolled to the feet of paul o'neill. Paul picked it up & came over to my son & signed it for him, to this day paul is his hero. Its too bad my son never really got a chance to see paul play the last 9 years... Thanks Mr O'neill

Hey Paulie-- I just wanted to thank you for all the memories. I am 14, and
since i was 7, you have been my favorite player. My favorite memory was on
February 4, 1994. It was my first yankees fan-fest, and it happened to be my
birthday. Me and my dad went by train up to New York. I was having a blast.
I had met Pat Kelly and Jim Leryitz, and my dad asked me who i wanted to go
meet next. I remember looking up at the signs and seeing PAUL O'NEILL. That
name reminded me of a card i had from a team set my grandma had sent me, so
i chose you next. I remember looking up (way up, i must have been 4 feet)
and saying "today's my birthdy!" you asked how old i was, where i lived. I
answered 7 and Washington Dc. You asked if I was going to fix things up in
DC (i obviously didn't get it at the time, but now i think it had something
to do with Clinton getting elected). You signed a baseball for me and today
it stands next to other fan-fest b-day autographs, including Joe Torre and
Andy Pettitte 2 years later. But by far, it is my favorite. You made my
birthday and my first yanks fan-fest one i will never forget. #21 is always
going to be my favorite number, and I'm sure that I will one day pass that
autographed ball on to one of my sons or grandsons and tell them about the
guy i looked up to physically and mentally. I understand why you're
retiring-- your young kids. I hope you teach them things you taught me--
NEVER GIVE UP, ALWAYS DRIVE YOURSELF TO 100 PERCENT. Have a great retirment
Paul and I hope to meet you someday again...

Dear Paulie, Thank you so much for putting your heart into every single
game that you played. I know that you have been criticized for taking things
too hard when you didn't get on base, but Yankee fans know the warrior that
you are, and how much you cared about helping the team in each and every
at-bat. As a college student in Boston, I have to deal with Red Sox fans all
the time, but even most of them realize that your performance shows the true
class that you had, along with the entire team. I had the pleasure of
sitting 50 feet away from you at Fenway Park on Good Friday in 2001, and it
was a real treat to see my favorite Yankee of all-time up so close. Also, I
was out in California this summer, and was lucky enough to be inside Edison
Field on August 25th when you became the oldest player to get a 20/20, while
Bernie Williams got his 200th homer, and Roger became the 4th AL Pitcher to
start the season 17-1. It's amazing how the the team of the decade is full
of surprises...even on the west coast!! As many fans have said, Right Field
won't be the same without you. I'll enjoy listening to you as you step into
the Broadcast booth for a few Y.E.S. Network games, for I know you know how
to play the game well, both with strength and heart. God Bless you and your

I heard the greatest news today and that is that you are going to be on
the broadcasting team for the Yankees! You have been my favorite Yankee
from day one. When I originally heard about the trade on Mike and the
Maddog, I was thrilled. I am sure he won't admit it but Maddog said it was
a bad trade but I knew it was wonderful. I wanted you to know that I often
used you as an example for my own boys who play sports. I think you embody
maybe great attributes that any athlete should have-work hard, be prepared,
expect the best of yourself, be a good teammate and most of all put your
team above your own stats. Thank for all the great years with the Yankees

I have been watching you since 1996 and I have no bad things to say
about you. From what I've seen your career as a Yankee has been incredible
and you should be very proud of yourself. I was very upset the last game of

be returning next season. I didn't know what to do. I realize that you
have kids at home who you need to be with, but just know that you will

but were gracious enough to write: Chris, BEST Wishes #21, Paul, W.S.96,98,99,2000. Chris will never forget what you did, nor will the people of New York who had the joy of seeing a great
player, gentleman and a great Yankee. I hope that one day the number 21 will
be retired with those other Yankee greats. God Bless you and your family.

As a native New Yorker currently living in the heart of Red Sox territory,
it is always a challenge to stay in tuned with events going on down at
Yankee Stadium. I did get a few glimpses while visiting family in NJ or
seeing a game at Fenway Park while the Yanks are in town. But the one thing
I always looked forward to was seeing you play. You were so modest with
such a heart for the game and the pinstripes... and it showed in your eyes
every time you stepped up to the plate or kept guard of right field. No
matter how good you were playing, you always wanted to be better. I really
admired that about you. You were the heart and soul of this great Yankee
dynasty, and your presence will surely be missed. I was there in game four
of the World Series this year when you hit that double right before Tino hit
the game-tying home run. All I kept thinking was, "If Paulie hadn't made
that hit, who knows what would have happened." I always saw you as the
unsung hero, yet it never seemed to bother you. As long as you did what you
had to do to help the team, that's all you cared about. You will be greatly
missed. #21 will always be my favorite number!

Paulie, Thank you for all the great memories. I have followed you carrer
with the yankees with great intrest. You have always been my favorite player
in major league baseball. You are one of the most modest professional
athletes out there. You always play with your heart and give it your all.
For these resons you make a great role model and examplify for young
athletes should act today. Right field will never seem the same. I just
can't imagine the bleecher creatures shouting anyone elses name at the
begining of the game. Good luck to you and your family.

Thanks for the great memories Paul. Time flies, but you sure packed a lot
of great moments into 9 years. I'll always remember you driving balls
through the infield, into the gaps, and into the seats, making running and
sliding catches, gunning down would-be baserunners, running the bases hard,
leaping above the right field fence to haul in "home-run" balls, and NEVER
being satisfied with failure, whether it be a pitch you missed or a strike
two Al Clark failed to correctly call a ball. My father told me stories about the great Yankees of the past. You can be
sure that years from now I will be telling my children stories about the
great Yankee Paul O'Neill. You will certainly be missed, but never
forgotten, in the Bronx. We all appreciate the game you brought to New York
and the way you and the rest of the Yankees never gave up and battled to the
end. I will always remember you as a champion and place you, along with Don
Mattingly, in the category of great franchise players/role models of present
day baseball.

I heard "your song" and as all Yankee Fans know, by that I mean The Who's
"Baba O'Riley" and immediately thought of you. I will never listen to that
song again without envisioning you up at bat. A new season grows near, and
although I am excited at the prospect of The Yankee's going for the title
again,it will never be the same without you. I hope you are enjoying the
Season and time with your family. Thanks again for all the outstanding
plays and dynamic memories. Happy New Year, and god bless you and yours.

I have a few of your cards and I think your awsome. You were a great right
fielder. I also heard you have 5 worldseries rings.(1 with Cincinatti Reds
and, 4 with New York Yankees) That's pretty impressive! I don't know how the
Yankees will play without you, but they'll pull through and you know it. I
also know you were great friends with all of them and they'll never forget
you. Well g2g, bye.

I've only been watchin the Yankees for about 3 soon to be 4 years, and
have only gotten really involved this last season. I thought it was so
awesome when everyone started cheering your name, it made me cry to think
you wont be blessing Yankee Field with your talent and grace. The day after
the season was 'finally' over it felt so weird knowing you, Chuck, David,
Tino, and Luis weren't coming back. I was actually kind of angry when they
signed Giambi, maybe it was the fact that i dont think he'll fit in but oh
well, right? It's a done deal. I just wanted to say thanks for everything
you've done for me, the city of New York and Yankee fans everywhere. There
(in my opinion) will never be talent out in right field like yours ever
again.

It was a pleasure and privilege to get to watch you play Mr. O'Neil.
There was never a doubt that you played hard every day and that your desire
to win and excel was second to none. I'll never forget the way you hit in
1994, it was amazing to watch. Best of luck in your retirement and
congratulations on a great career.

Thank you Paulie for giving us all that you had to offer. Your Spirit,
determination, devotion and love for the game made watching you amazing.
Each time you were at bat I knew it would be incredable! Never did you let
me down, you always hung in to the very end. I would just once like to have
heard the conversation that you carried on with yourself and your bat. I
thank-you for being yourself and never holding back. I will miss you and
hope that you enjoy being able to spend all your time with your family. May
God Bless you and keep you and your family safe. Thanx again Paulie 21!!

Paul I will miss you. You are one of the only reasons why I learned so
much about baseball and watched so many Yankee games. I didn't really start
to watch until the end of 1998 (the World Series)after the Yankees won all
those games. I wish I had paid attention sooner. You've been a pleasure to
watch. Stay healthy. I used to work in the World Trade Center and I think it was nice of you and the other Yankees to go to Ground Zero. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Dear Paul: For the second time in recent years, my family and I have felt
a great pain as we see the Yankees lose either the World Series (2001) or to
the Seattle Mariners as it happened in 1995. 2001 was worse because we know
how much pain you felt being this your last year playing baseball. You have been the heart of the Yankees, and we think every fan realizes
that. What would happen now? We imagine the legacy will go on with Bernie,
Derek and Jorge, but indeed it will not be the same with some many of you
gone. We admire your tenacity and dedication. Hopefully, you will come back to
work with the Yankees. We will miss you, it will never be the same. Thank
you for your game ethics, as well as your integrity. Thank you for the
memories. Amanda

Dear Mr. O'Neill, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart
for all of the enjoyment I derived from watching you play right field for
the Yankees. Your play exemplified the word Yankee. The two times I was
proudest of you might surprise some people, the first was game 5 of the 97
ALDS (the double, I don't think I've ever seen a ball hit harder) and the
second was game 7 of this year's WS (the almost triple, you were right to go
for it). George was right, you ARE truly a warrior and you will be SORELY
missed. Right field at THE STADIUM will NEVER be the same. You were truly
the heart and soul of this AMAZING team. I look forward to seeing your
number retired in Monument Park at 'Paul O'Neill' day. You truly deserve to
be honored among the Yankee immortals. Like Bernie said in '98 'you were the
first piece of the puzzle'. I lost my dad this year and I have a tremendos
amount of respect for the way you played game 4 of the WS against the Braves
the day after your dad died. I was at that game, and I know now how you must
have felt. Anyway, I wish you all the best and who knows, maybe some day,
you'll end up back in Pinstripes again...as the manager. PS: The arguments with umpires would be awesome.

I promised a song, and I made a song. It goes to the tune of "Lord, I
Lift Your Name on High," and here it is:
Paul, I lift your game on high
Paul, I loved to watch the Yankees
I'm so glad you played baseball
I'm so glad you amazed us
(Refrain)
-You came to New York to show the way
-To the post-season, you played every day
-From the playoffs to the Series you won five rings, oh my!
-Paul I lift your game on high
Paul, I lift your game on high
Your the '94 batting champ
You work harder than anyone
You're the heart and soul of the Yanks
(refrain)
Paul, I lift your game on high
Five all-star games you played in
You won the series in both leagues
You taught the Yanks how to win
(refrain)
Paul, I lift your game on high
Your teams pitched three perfect games
The '98 team was the best
In '01 it was a shame (refrain)
