Paul: I have truly enjoyed watching you play for the Yankees. It seems
like only yesterday that you came on board. You are a true champion and a
great representative for major league baseball and the New York Yankees. My
wife, two sons and I will never look at right field in Yankee Stadium the
same way as when you were there. Good luck to you and your family and thanks
for the memories!

Thanks for all you've given NY. We'll miss you a ton. You were my first favorite Yankee back when I started watching baseball at age 6 or 7. I started playing in right field and my coaches would always yell catch it like paul! You've been an inspiration to me and countless Yankees fans. We salute you! Come back and visit.

Paulie, it was an absolute joy to watch you play for the last 9 years.
Rightfield will never be the same without you. My brother and I have
idolized you and it really hurts to see you go. When the fans chanted your
name in Game 5 at the Stadium it gave me goosebumps. It was very emotional,
we love you Paulie, and we thank you for everything that you gave us, which
was everything you had. You never gave up an at-bat and were truly "The
Warrior". In the 1996 Series, when you had a hurt leg and you ran down that
ball against the Braves, it was absolutely awesome and it showed your
toughness and heart. Thank you Paulie, my brother and I will see you again
at the Stadium when they retire #21 on Paul O'Neill day. Enjoy your
retirement and happy holidays to you and your family.

Thank you for treating every single play, at-bat, and pitch like it could
be your last. You played the game every single day the way any young man in
America would if given the opportunity to play in just one game for the New
York Yankees. My children will hear your career spoken about as I heard
about those of Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra when I was growing up.

With you retired and Scotty following your lead, Knobby to KC and Tino to
St. Louie, this will be a whole new team next year. The baton has been
passed to DJ, Bernie and Jorge to carry on that great determination and
class that, together, all of you have shown us Yankee fans. Other than
Thurman Munson, no "one" Yankee has stood out to me. Until you. You
represented everything a fan could appreciate about this game of baseball,
intensity, integrity, determination, class, and respect. You left us the
same way you came to us, no fanfare, no big interview, no hoopla. But do
not be mistaken, Mr. Paul O'Neill, you are a BIG BIG part of every Yankee
fan and will always hold a special place in all our hearts. And we will all
be proud the day your number is on that plaque out in left field. You will truly be missed!! Good luck to you and the best to your family. P.S. if you talk to Tino, wish him as well.

Paul, although I'm a Mets fan, and have been a great admirer of the right
field position since the days of seeing the great Clemente perfect the art
of play to that postition, I will always consider you among the best of your
generation in RF. Realizing that the 1996-2001 Yankess have long secured a
place in baseball history forever, I will always know that you were the
personification of what that great Yankee dynasty was all about. It was a
great pleasure being able to watch you play the game of baseball. Good luck
always!

Paul, you are my favorite player and idiol of baseball. You will be missed
by many even if they didnt like you at times with your immpassionts, i
akways liked that quality in you. You are the best and you made many peoples
eyes tear when we found out it was dwefinet that you were going to retire.
Alls i will rember is you tipping your hat to the crowd at your last home
game. Whne ever i look at the picture of that i bought in my room ill always
think of that night and the last game of the World Series. i saw all the
memories of you drifting back into my head...you were very important to the
yankee team and NOBODY could take your place. You are more important then
any world series title or ring you mine and many other peoples everything.
Shane Spence will not ever take your place and he will never be loved like
you were. when i grow up i always say to my friend that i am gunna find you
ad meet you and i just wanna tell you that i am your #1 fan!!! i really do
hope you read this and maybe even write back...well i have to go now buh bye

Paul, I want to cry whenever I remember that you retired. You are and
always have been my favorite player. My whole apartment has Yankee and Paul
O'Neill memorabilia. It feels so different now that you will not be playing
baseball anymore - the Yankees just won't be the same, and now that Brosius
is retiring as well and Martinez might not be on the Yankees anymore, it
just seems like after you announced your retirement, the Yankees just
started to fall apart. They'll NEVER be the same without you and I honestly
don't know how I'm going to be able to go to the game or watch it on TV and
not see you in right field or at bat, with that determined look in your
eyes. I always looked forward to when you were at bat and made everyone
around me shut up so I could concentrate on watching. There is an emptiness
in the Yankees and in my heart that can never be filled again. Thank you
for so many great seasons and wonderful memories. You'll be missed more

Pauly, I've been on this planet for almost 52 years. I've been following
baseball and the Yankees since my aunt from the bronx gave me a Yankee
uniform when I was six years old. I've seen a lot of the greats from the
fifties and sixties and somehow the caliber of those Yankee greats stands
above modern times. Except that is for you Mr. O'Neill and Mr. Mattingly.
Thanks for being my modern hero and role model in my middle years. As a man

Even when she got to meet and talk with Catfish Hunter, you remained her favorite player. I just bought a pic for her Christmas and it will be her favorite gift. Even Santa can't beat that. You have been her hero and a great role model as she has become interested in sports. the Yankee team let the d backs win the 2001 World Series because they are a
new team an dhave not known what it was like to win a World Series ring. I
hope that Paul, Luis, and Scott were great players. I LOVE YANKEES AND I
LOVE THE PLAYERS.

I will start off by saying, "THANK-YOU" for all of the exquisite and
dynamic memories!!You have always been my favorite and I will miss you
immensely. I Love The Yankees, but somehow, it will not be the same without
you. I will remain a Yankee Fan, however, I will find it exceedingly
difficult to look at right field without you in the midst of it. You made
right field "come alive." I have enjoyed watching you, as has my husband, from the first day you
came on board as a Yankee. If I was somewhere in the house doing some chore
while the game was on, I would stop, drop everything, and RUN to see you get
up at bat. You were the very essence of The Yankees. And, I so enjoyed
your serious reflective moods, your concentration, and your reactions to
"bad calls by the umps" and your wanting to give every bit of yourself every
time up at bat. You were amazing, at bat, and on the field!! When The Yankees won the Series right after your Father passed away, I
watched with tears rolling down my cheeks. You see I lost my Father the
same day you lost yours, and I was extremely close to him as well. I shared
your grief, and your happiness in grasping "The World Series", and was
thinking of my Father as well. I bet your Dad was watching and was clapping
very loudly in heaven. And, was very proud of you. I wish you all great things, including endless health, happiness, love,
and "fun" with your family. Enjoy. And, Paul, I hope we see you every now
and then. I wish you would become an announcer for The Yankees. But, I know
you want to be with your family. God Bless you and yours. And, Paul,
"Thank-you" I will never ever forget you...

I am a diehard REDS fan. (Born and raised in Cincinnati.) I've watched you since you joined them. Do you know how torn I've been rooting for the Yankees. I'm sorry to see you go, but at least now I can focus all my energy back to the Reds. Are you coming back home to Ohio? I will miss you. Be happy with whatever you do.

I could never ever begin to tell you how much you have meant to so many people, me included. From the 97 Play-offs against Cleveland, when you hustled to 2nd base like your life depended on it, is when I knew how very special you are. I am so happy you wore the pinstripes and have added your name to the list of Yankee Legends. I have been proud to call you my favorite player over these last years and you will always be. You epitomize everything "Yankee" stands for. The pride, tradition and above all else the dignity. I am so incredibly sad we won't be seeing your "exercising" in right field between pitches, but I understand your wanting to leave while on the top of your game. And 20/20!! How cool was that??? Well, I had to write, and hope to see you at some baseball shows. And, no matter what, The Yankees are still Champions in 2001 in no small part because of you. Thanks Paulie, Love Ya Always.

Paul, Growing up a Yankee fan in the 1970s, you could say I've seen the Yankees run the gamut over the last 25 years. From the days of Billy & Reggie fighting in the dugout to the pain of some of the late 80s/early 90s teams under the direction of such managers as Stump Merrill. I've seen it all. But when the Yankess brought you on board back in 93, something unique happened. Class began to creep back in to the Yankee organization. I enjoyed going the Stadium to see you and Don Mattingly play. I was able to say for the first time in a long time that there were now players wearing the Yankee pinstripes who deserved the privelege. Now, class epitomizes the Yankees thanks to the contributions of players like yourself and Tino (I hope he comes back), Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams and so many others (of course, having Joe Torre and Don Zimmer on the bench with Mel Stottlemeyer shouldn't be overlooked either). It's been such a joy to watch you guys these past 6 seasons...not so much because of all the winning, but because of the manner in which you guys have carried yourselves in victory and defeat. It's been class no matter what the situation. You guys gave so many of us here in New York something to cheer about when it seemed like so much was lost after September 11. You may never know how much that helped us through a very difficult time. You showed the rest of the country what New York is truly about. You can knock us down, but you can't knock us out. This city will be back and so will the Yankees. I truly wish you could have retired with another World Series ring for your collection. Please know that your desire to win and your passion for the great game of baseball will be missed by all of us who've had the pleasure of watching you wear the pinstripes. And thanks, too, for the work you do for kids. As a father with a 2 year old daughter, I obviously want the world to be a better place for her. You recently said while cleaning out your locker after this year's World Series that family is everything. That right there is another example of why you'll be missed. You seem to be
one of the few ballplayers who's kept the game in perspective. Paul, the Yankees will miss you, I will miss you, and Yankee fans everywhere will miss you. You may have stopped playing the game, but you will forever be a Yankee. And that's not a bad label to wear. God Bless and many happy years of retirement.

I will miss your presence in RF at Yankee Stadium and in the locker room.
You determination and constant pursuit for perfection drove your teammates
to do the same. Watching you as a Yankee and as a baseball player has been
an honor and I hope you have been a long lasting influence on the rest of
the team once you retire. I'm sure you'll be missed the same way I missed
Mattingly and Reggie when they left the Yankees. I will never forget your
guts and pure passion for the game. Your double in game 5 against the
Indians in 1997 was a lasting image in my mind and was an example of your
Yankee career. You were getting a double whether the throw beat you or not,
and you got it. I'm sure you are upset because it wasn't a homer but that is
what makes you a great Yankee and baseball player. You always wanted and
expected to do as much as you could for the team.

The thought of sitting in the bleachers and not having your commanding 6'4" presence (pockets turned inside out, of course) guarding the outfield is unimaginable! Knowing almost for certain that Game 7 of the World Series was Paul O'Neill's last I deliberately rescheduled my whole Sunday to catch the game
in its entirety. It just so happened Game 7 fell on my mom's birthday and we
were supposed to go out to dinner at 6:30. We ended up requesting a seat
across from the bar so I could watch the beginning of the Yankee game, and
the people next to me must have thought I was a Yankee freak because I kept
cheering! When Paulie stepped up to bat and he knocked the ball into the outfield
we were driving, and listening on the radio. We had to stop the car and
cheer for him as he ran to 3rd base. When he got out instead of being upset
I laughed and said "Leave it to Paulie". I never got to see him play. I always bugged my parents CONSTANTLY,
offering to give up trips and presents, haha. But, when he came up for his
last at-bat, I couldnt help it and tears were burning my eyes. Im not sure
if he notices, and I hope he signs on to read this, but, him playing
baseball for so many years isnt just a game to all of his fans. It isnt rare
that we reschedule our lives to watch a group of men who dont even know we
exist play a game of baseball, because that's not how we see it. We become
accustomed to rooting for the Yankees and seeing a man like Paul O'Neill,
excuse me, a Legend like Paul O'Neill retire.... it's heart-breaking but
yet, we know we will always keep the memories in our hearts, just as I'm
sure Paul will. So if you actually sat through reading all of this, haha, I wish Paulie
could read this and know, he will forever be the Warrior of the Bronx
Bombers! Forever a Fan, Alyssa

Pleeeease come back, I hear the Reds have offered you a contract. Please take it. I am a HUGE fan of urs and dont care what team u come back with as
long as u come back. I know retirement looks tempting but it is soo final.
If you retire now ull never get the chance to play major league ball again.
Please play another year, u wont regret it, just one more memory to take
with u in ur retirement. Players play beyond their 40's these days...please
re-consider it. Oh and I also have noticed some of the charities ur involved
with, just another reaosn why ur a class act. P.S. I been trying to do ur
batting stance and i cant figure out one thing, do u lean on ur front foot
or the back when u bring the bat around?

After they let Don Mattingly go and retire, I never thought I would find another player that I could root for more. Then you can to the team
and I found another player that I could relate to. I think that you are one
of the greatest players in the game. Last year I thought that you should
have been made the MVP. You had better stats than Jeter had but they chose
him anyway. Not that I don't think that Jeter isn't a great ballplayer but
I think they take your talents for granted. I like your drive and
detemination to be the best you can be on and off the field. I wish you
could play the game forever but I know you can't. I think that you will
make a great manager someday if that's what you choose to do. The game has
lost one of it's best players and role models. I will miss you too. I wish
you all the best in everything that you do. Thank you for all the memories.

When I was 16 or 17 I saw a young minor leaguer named Thurman Munson. For
the rest of his life I always admired him for his gritty determination to
win and to win because he played harder than anyone else on the field. I
honestly never thought that I would see another player with the same
intensity and the same love and respect of the game. When you doubled in the
9th inning against the Indians in 97 I said to my kids "The only player I've
ever seen will himself to scoring position like that was the Captain." It
has been an honor to watch you play in New York for the past 9 seasons.

As a Yankee fan since the '50 I have never seen a tribute to any player
matching the salute you received in the ninth inning of Game 5 in Yankee
Stadium. It was all the more remarkable because the Yanks were behind at
the time and fans were seeing their entire season slipping away. Though New
Yorkers are uniquely intolerant of losing and even more so of incompetence
disguised as "best effort," their sports fans are among the world's most
knowledgeable, and they also embrace their winners like no others. On this
night all 56,000 got it right; they were less concerned about losing the
game than about losing something far more important--Paul O'Neill--the heart
and soul of the Yankee team. I don't know if you read these messages, but I
hope you do and print them out as keepsakes for yourself and your family.
Each one of them in a special way is saying the same thing---how much we
appreciate what you have given to all of us over the years. In retirement
we wish you and your family the best always and know that your legacy of
excellence will inspire all who follow in your footsteps. And on some cold
dark night, if life should throw you a nasty curve, I hope you will remember
these notes along with the ninth inning of Game 5 and the unconditional love
they represent. The words of 'Casey at the Bat' come to mind: ".And when
the Great Scorer comes to write against your name, He thinks not if you won
or lost, but how you played the game." I'm sure your final scorecard will
read O'Neill, 4 for 4!

Dear Paul, What else is there to say? So many of your fans are thankful
for a great 2001 season, and for the years you've contributed to the great
game of baseball. You made it through injuries and showed the devotion
instilled in your heart and soul. Personally, you're my favorite player,
and your absence in the line-up next season will be missed. I've enjoyed
watching you at various stadiums and at Yankee Stadium, and on television.
It's going to be a long, cold winter without Yankee Baseball...and it's
going to be lonely in the dugout without your presence, and on the field.
Being home with your family is a blessing, and I know this is where you want
to be. But, part of me hopes you'll return in some capacity within the
Yankee organization, where you can be seen by the fans who love and miss
you! Have a wonderful retirement, may the Good Lord continue to bless you
with good health, and keep you happy. Hope to see you in the Spring -
looking forward to a Paul O'Neill retirement celebration in the Bronx!

Paul O'Neil, the name that brings tears to all of our eyes as we are
trying to cope with your retirement. I write on behalf of my family to
thank you for all that you've done for diehard Yankees fans. My uncle
raised myself and my 3 siblings as Yankees fans from the time we were
infants. I can't recall happier times in my life than sitting around with
everyone watching the Yanks. And just as everyone has a favorite team, we
all have favorite players. From the moment you were traded to the Yanks,
when I was 9 years old, I fell in love with you. Last year right before the
2000 World Series my uncle had a sudden stroke, and I prayed that you guys
would win it for him. I went to the hospital every night in my Yankee
attire to watch the game with him as he recouperated. I'll never forget how
weak and helpless my once very strong uncle looked: but what I'll never
forget even more was the strength he found within him to root on the
Yanks..it was unbelievable. To believe in something that much is truly
amazing. He's like you Paul, he believes in his team. To have faith like
that is a true quality. My mother had to calm me down in the 9th inning of
game 5 when the stadium was applauding you..I was hysterical..I couldn't
believe that this was it. Not only was it the end of a another great Yankee
career, but it was the end of for someone who was beyond the game of
baseball..a true player in every sense. I call you the salt of the earth, a
diamond in the rough, a gem of a man...I call you my hero..Not for what you
did in those pinstripes, but how you wore them. You embody a true player,
not only by your physical ability, but more importantly by your great
strength of character. Your presence on the field can never be emulated.
You achieved perfection out there in Yankee stadium in every sense possible,
and I know Joe Torre or New York will never forget you for all you did.
You're a symbol, a symbol that gets us Yankee fans through the hardest of
times. #21 will live on forever in our hearts..a number that belongs to a great man! God Bless you Paul O'Neil!

You have been my favorite sports star ever since I started to watch games.
I started collecting baseball cards in 1988 (I was 10) and you have always
been my favorite. I was able to see you play many games in Cincinnati, but
unfortunately never in the Yankee pinstripes. I have gotten your autograph
on a few occasions, and I even have a photo of you holding your baby son in
1990 (I have no idea how I got that shot). Anyway, I don't want to bore
you, so I wish you the best of luck and give you thanks for all the great
years you contributed to this game. Steinbrenner once quoted you as having
"the heart of a lion." I think it's fair to say you also have the heart and
soul of all New Yorkers and anyone who is a fan of baseball. Thanks for

Paul, congratulations on a great season and a wonderful career! We were sad about the team losing the Series, but prouder than ever of what the team
has accomplished this year, given all the injuries and hardships that you
all had to overcome. You should all be proud of yourselves! It has been
exciting watching you play for the Yankees. You will be sorely missed, I
can assure you. It will be strange looking out in right field and not
seeing you standing there. However, you have given us so many great thrills
and memories; you deserve to now enjoy time with your family. We'll never
forget you! God bless and enjoy!
