Paulie, thanks for making baseball exciting. Your energy, ability and heart have saved a magnificant game and you will never be forgotten by your
fans. We all hope to see you in a Yankees uniform again sometime in the
future. You can certainly teach a lot of younger players how the game is to
be played.

Paul, Over the years I haven't been a big baseball fan. I was more into football and basketball. I watched you play a game several years ago, and
the announcers were talking about what a class act you are. I then watched
you play for the Yankees over the last few years and realized that you
truely are a "Great" baseball player and a "Real" class act. We need more
men like you in professional sports that our children can look up to and
model themselves after. I really am thankful that I have gotten to watch a
you play over the last few years. The "Warrior" nickname fits you well.
Thanks for the memories. I will forever be a Paul O'Neill fan. Your the
greatest!!! Enjoy your retirement.

Some day, when it has finally hit home that your family was more important
than playing one or two more years, you will sit down and read these remarks
about your career. To me, you are without a doubt the greatest YankeeI have
ever loved. It was much more than a diving catch, that sweet swing or the
thrown helmet, it was YOU! I never saw a more intense, unselfish ferocious
player as yourself and now I realize I never will again. But Jesus gave me
the honor of watching one of (I am sure) his favorite sons perofrm in the
grandest of houses and I never will forget you and your accomplishments. I
still have the 1998 WS gamer I bough off BOB and I think he made a mistake
selling it but I will never part with it. Hold your head up Mr. O'Neill and
BRAVO! I can tell my grandchildren I saw the best that ever was!

> I Guess it started about 9 years ago in your first season as a Yankee. I
was eleven years old and very tired of growing up as a kid seeing a losing
team. With one swing of the bat vs. Toronto on a july afternoon in the
bottom of the 8th inning everything changed. You didn't make the playoffs
that year but I knew that the new yankees had seen their last losing year.
You quickly became my favorite player . I don't even play baseball(college
hockey) but your determination and attitude has been in these 9 years such
an inspiration. Thank you so much. I'll never forget growing up with you as
a role model, keeping newspaper clippings and sitting out in the bleachers
on hot afternoons. Things will never be the same for me as a yankee fan.
Most people I know never really had anyone they admired, so i feel fortunate
to have grown up with a "role model". I was at game 5 and it was probably
one of the hardest things of my young life to see you trot in from right
field for (what we thought was) the last time. Until the end you stayed
humble and modest, painfully tipping your cap to the crowd. Thanks for
everything Paul, come back and see us.

I am real sorry to see you go. I have been a Yankee fan since 1979 and
I've never seen anyone play harder than you. The play when you doubled in
the ninth inning of the '97 ALCS and almost broke your leg sliding into
second sticks out in mind as a symbol of the heart and desire you played
with. Every Yankee fan I talk to considers you one of the all-time Yankee
greats and so do I. I look forward to going to the Stadium when they retire
your number, just as I did for Don Mattingly. Best of luck to you, Paulie.
Thanks for making the past 9 seasons extra special for me.

I am so upset that you are retiring. I recently moved to New Jersey and
became a big Yankee fan. You are my favorite player. The last game I went
to you hit a home run to win the game( vs. White Sox in October 2001). Lots of luck in spending time with your family. We'll miss you.

Thanks for the great memories Paul. I will never forget your last game at Yankee Stadium. I sat in section 27, about 4 rows to the right of the right
field foul pole. The crowd cheered your name over and over again, like a
scene out of a movie. I will also never forget the catch at the end of game
5 in the 96 WS when you went deep on a ball hit by Polonia and caught it on
a dead run to end the game. You have been such a part of Yankee baseball,
that it will be hard imaginig anyone else roming the hallowed ground of
right field in THTRB. Thanks for the tenacity, thanks for the loyality, and
thanks again for the memories.

Thanks for 9 wonderful years as a Yankee. You will be missed. When my boyfriend and I would go Yankee Statium we always sat in right field with
our O'Neill # 21 jerseys on.He just asked me "Where are we going to sit now
that Paulie retired?" I,m not sure.We both hope that "The Boss" has a Paul
O'Neill day and retires # 21 because no one will wear it with as much Yankee
Pride as you did. Thanks again. Enjoy your family.

Paul, Do you have any baseball signings coming up in my area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut). I just had a baby Boy on 8/18/01, and His name is
Kyle, hopefully he will be a Yankee someday. Kyle, my Wife Michelle and I
would love to meet the Great Yankee Warrior of all time. I have enjoyed all
the great years you have played. You are a true warrior and have loved the
game as far as I can see. Hopefully we can meet you in the near future. All
of us would be greatful and it would be a time we never would forget in
years to come to meet you in person. Thanks Again all the great things you

I don't really know if you actually read these messages, but I just wanted
to tell you something. I've never followed you before, or baseball for that
matter, only recently being exposed to your incredible career. While
watching your last game, a good friend of mine explained to me your history,
how important you are to the Yankees (and NY) and your fantastic style. I
immediately became a fan, and lamented over the fact that I entered into the
arena too late. However, being a new fan and not knowing much about
everything, I want you to know that your infallible spirit truly does live
on.

wonderful. You are truly one of kind! Your spirit and enthusiam for the
game is something you should be proud of. You have alot of fans who will
miss you. I will miss #21 in right field - I wish you and your family
happiness in the coming years and maybe one day you can come back to the

Hey Paul, Why'd you have to go and retire. Now I'll never be able to get
you to sign the home run ball that I caught! I'll never forget that night.
They (Cleveland) had just beaned Jeter, and I said to my girlfriend, "Oh
Man, Paulie is going to make them pay for that one!" And boy you sure did. &
I still have that ball that you crushed into your favorite target, the right
field short porch @ Yankee Stadium. Thanks for all of the great hard playing years as a Yankee. As everyone is saying, you will trully be missed. Enjoy retirement & your time with your
family, you deserve it. But please come back to visit Yankee Stadium and NY so I can get you to
sign my ball!

I just wanted to write a quick note to you and congratulate you on a fine
career. I began following you when I received my first card of you which
was a 1988 Donruss. I am originally from Cincinnati (Batavia) and I lived
there from birth until I graduated from U.C. last year and got a job in
Orlando. However, I have followed you since I got that first card and was
totally devastated when you were traded. After you were traded, I was able
to see you play (in person) only two times which were both at Comiskey in
1998. In 1999, I met you at Reds Fest at the Convention Center and you
signed the authenic jersey I have with your number on the back! I have
probably have about 300 cards of you alone and I am constantly adding to my
collection! That will do it for me. Congratulations on a super career.
Wish you were playing next year but that's okay...you'll always be a
Yankee!!

Paul, I pray that you know, in your humble, gracious way, how very much all your adoring fans, including myself and my family, will miss you. Even reading these messages brings tears streaming as it did the last night of the world series. Of course I wanted the NYY to win, It just finally hit me that we would never see you again. Your winning work ethic, never ending zest for the game, undying loyalty to your team ...and that giant bat that you swung so well truly made that magical team come together as champions! I wish I could shake your hand and thank you for being the consumate professional and role model that you are. Quietly, confidentally, out of the spotlight you rose up and became a Yankee legend. My dad just passed away and we watched every game together, as did everyone in my family. It was more than a sport...it is a tradition. As a special gift from my heart, I raise champion weimaraners, lovely sporting dogs that I show. If you ever want a puppy... please, just email me! Really! It would be an honor and you're kids would love it :) You are my all time favorite #21! God bless you & you're family.

they're the best baseball team to ever exist but also because they had Paul
O'Neil....I'll never forget you and neither will the rest of New
York...Torre summed it up good when he said you were much more than your
stats...You're an amazing player....You'll definitely go down in history
with the rest of those Yanks! Thanks for all the wonderful years, and win
or lose I'll always be proud to be a Yankees fan, and most of all a Paul
O'Neil fan! I love you Paul!

I have been a Yankee fan my entire life and I have seen players come and
go over the years but I can honestly say that NO OTHER PLAYER (aside from
maybe Don Mattingly) has ever touched me the way that Paul O'Neill has. I
have loved you since the first day you stepped into those pinstripes nine
years ago. For the past 2 years I have seen this retirement coming but I
had been in denial...every year I kept hoping for one more year out of our
warrior. But I knew it had to come to an end some day. I never thought I
would be so sad to watch a Yankee retire. Paulie, you have meant so much to this team, to this city and to the fans
that there aren't enough words to express how much we love you. You have
been the absolute HEART & SOUL of this team over the years. I have so much
admiration and respect for you. You have been a leader by example, the
personification of what the Yankees are all about--a team player, a grinder,
a warrior, a gentleman, a winner and a CHAMPION! You will be remembered by your fans as a man of unbelieveable intensity &
fire, a player who was nothing short of great for this team. It will be
very difficult to look out into right field and not see you there practicing
your swing in the outfield. THANKS for the memories Paulie, thanks for being a warrior & a champion,
thanks for caring, thanks for never giving up, thanks for being loyal,
thanks for giving us your all with every atbat, every catch, every throw,
thanks for being a true Yankee and most of all THANKS FOR BEING YOU....there
will never be another you--Right field will never be the same but you will
always be #21 in my heart! God bless you, #21 Forever!

I was at the stadium for Game 5 and must say that my fondest baseball
memory at this point will be saluting you by chanting your name. You were
the heart and soul of the Yankees for nine incredible years and although you
don't like taking credit, I feel you are LARGELY responsible for bringing
the championship back to the Bronx. As a New Yorker, I have also always
appreciated your love for this city and it's people...we are a hard group to
understand, and you always have. When you have been critized for your
passion I have always defended you because it was that spirit and drive that
made our run possible and I share the same inability to control my emotions
especially disappointed in myself. I hope that you enjoy your retirement
and time with your children. I will always consider you one of the best to
ever play the game, along with Joe D, Mantle, et al. and I know that in
years to come I will reflect fondly on the years you spent in right field on
the greatest stage in baseball. Thank you and god bless you and yours.

Paul, I have been a big fan of yours for many years now and although I am
sad that you will not be back playing baseball next year, I wish you and
your family all the best in the future. I became a baseball fan during the
1980 World Series because of my father. I knew nothing about baseball then,
but learned alot from my father and brother. By the late 1980's, I lost
interest in the sport. Then a few years later, as a way of communicating
with my father, I became interested in baseball again and we became Yankee
fans. I think this was around the time you joined the Yankees; so I guess
you can say that I have been a fan since the beginning of your Yankee
career. This tremendous run with the Yankees began in 1994 with the season
shortened year (the Yankees probably would have been in the World Series
that year too). My Dad and I had so much fun talking baseball, everyday.
Sadly, my father only got to see the 1996 World Championship, as he passed
away in January 1997. I was only 32 years old then and was devastated as it
was unexpected. We even talked baseball while he was in the hospital. Even
though he could not speak, I knew he understood me. Some of the things my
Dad and I shared in common were our love of baseball and comedy. I didn't
think I could continue to watch baseball without my father, but I have and
these last four years have been incredible. The 1998 season was amazing,
another title in 1999, and then the 2000 Subway Series. I know my father
would have loved that series. My Mom told he was watching. I don't know
how any post-season could have been filled with more tension and drama as
this season was. You and the rest of your team can be very proud of what
you accomplished this year and what you've given the fans. This year will
be remembered for a long time. You and all the other players are a class
act. One moment I will especially remember is Game 5 when the stadium crowd
serenaded you. I was in tears. I hope the Yankees find a suitable right
fielder, but they will never be able to replace you - your personality, spirit or passion for the
game. You will be greatly missed. Good bye and good luck #21. Thanks
again for all the joy you have given me.

The numbers of the my two favorite athletes make up the security code of
my bank card, which I set in 1993 - just after I left college. The number 21
make up the first 2 and the last two are reserved to the best college
basketball rebounder the Big East has ever seen. Based on that information
you can probably guess what TYPE of player I (and many others) admire. I write this not for today, but when you (and many of have gotten to know
you) will truely appreciate this - years from now when your kids are in High
School an they want to know what fans thought of your work ethic and
tenacity. I solute your consistent effort, it inspires me and many others and in
ways you will never accept. Please know that you had me and many other jumping around in our
apartments celebrating at 1:00am on a work night during this last home
stand. Those moments are irreplaceable. We have been so spoiled by your Yankee teams and will look back at this
time with reverence. Ultimately, this team will be debated as one of the
best ever in Baseball history --- not just Yankee history. Neurologist say that memories tied to great emotion are stored in a strong
hold at the base of our brains and we have tendency never to forget them.
And for all the positive moments you gave me over the nine years with the
Yankees, I say thank you.. enjoy your family and your life. See you in the HALL and when #21 is retired at Yankee standium. Ted

notch right fielder coming to the team. Watching you play with the fire and
intensity you had was awesome. Right away you became my favorite Yankee
after Don Mattingly. Once Mattingly retired I you were in my mind the best
player on the team. Thank you for helping to make every Yankees game since
you joined the team a joy to watch. Good luck in your retirement.

Thank you for playing the game the way it was meant to be played. Win or lose Yankees fans knew they would get nothing but guts & determination from
their right fielder. It has been an honor to watch you play all these years
and you will be sorely missed. Knowing the type of player and man that you
are, it is probably beyond your comprehension to think that fans are
thanking you for merely being you. What you may not understand now will
hopefully become clear to you later. A select few players have been able to
transcend generations and move into the class of Yankees greats. Ruth,
Gehrig, DiMaggio, Ford, Berra, Rizzuto, Mantle, Munson, Guidry,
Mattingly.and now O'neill. Good luck with whatever life hands you and once
again. Thank You.

Paul: Thanks for the memories. Nothing great gets done without passion and you epitomized the passion of the Yankees! As a Yankee fan of fifty years,
the 1998 team will always be my favorite....a well oiled machine...no
superstars, just everyone pulling toward a common goal in their own quiet
way (except Wells). Thanks again!!

with the Reds! God be with you in whatever you choose to do! God Bless!

Yankees. You have a lot of fans..... thanks

Paul, I'm a 33 year from Cedar Rapids, Ia and have been a dedicated and passionate fan of the Yankees since I can remember watching baseball in the
late seventies. Back then it was players like Reggie Jackson, Ron Guidry and
others that molded me into the fan that I am now. After Reggie left in the
early eighties it was a young Don Mattingly and another of my all time
favorites, Mike Pagliarulo, that tried year in and year out to get to the
playoffs and seemed to always be just one step behind the Bluejays. Into the
late eighties and the early nineties the team suffered thru some ugly
seasons of mediocrity. I still followed the standings and stats of the guys
just as any fan would no matter how bad they were doing. Some of the players
I remember from then that I had high hopes for were guys like Hensley
Muelens, flash in the pan Kevin Maas, a very young Bernie Williams and oh, a
guy by the name of Roberto Kelly (Do you remember him Paul?) Kelly, I would
have to say, was one of my favorite players thru this era along with Donnie
Baseball. I was pretty shocked during the off-season of (I think it was '92
or '93) when they traded Kelly to Cincinnati for you. At the time I didn't
think it was a good move, as I didn't know anything about you or your
career. I have to say that I was completely wrong about you and what you
would bring to the team. It's no secret that it was soon after acquiring you
that the team became a winner again. The success that started when you guys
won in '96 and continued to 2000 resurected a pride that had become somewhat
dormant in Yankee fans since the late 70's and early 80's. Jumping ahead to
this year, with everyone knowing it was going to be your last, I have to say
that it was a pleasure to watch you play a game you obviously love. As I
watched the finish to game 7, with the Yanks leading going into the ninth,
you were pinch hit for by Chuck Knoblauch. I was somewhat dissapointed, just
as other Yankees fans were, that you didn't get that one more at bat to end
your career with. T! he game also ended in dissapointment later, but I found myself saying to
my 9 year old son that it was probably the best series that I can remember
watching. I really wanted to see you go out on top and felt somewhat sorry
for you and other guys like Mike Mussina, and especially Randy Velarde (who
I really wanted to see get his ring on his return to NY), he'll have to wait
awhile longer. The recent successes of this team the last few years made
this end a little bit easier to take. In closing this long winded message to
you I would like you to know how important you became to Yankees fans
throughout the country. If you don't believe me, watch the tape of game 5's
later innings and just listen, I already have a couple of times. I hate to
see you go as I think you could still play a few more years, but I can
understand it also. Good luck 21, you were and are a special kind of player
that doesn't come around often. Thank you.

I have been a Yankee fan since 1969, when I was six years old and was, I
think, the only Yankee fan in a sea of Mets' fans in Rye, NY. In all of
that time, you have best reflected what I have admired and enjoyed about the
Yankees and what the team means. Your contribution to the Yankees cannot be
overestimated. I have two young sons, ages five and three, and, as I teach
them about baseball, you can be sure that I will point to you, Derek Jeter,
Tino Martinez, Mariano Rivera and only a few others as illustrations of what
it means to be a Yankee and a champion. I cannot thank you enough for the
joy you and your teammates have brought me over the past few years. You
have much to be proud of in your career, and I wish you the best in your
retirement.

When I think of Paul ONeill only one word comes to my mind, WARRIOR! You
will be greatly missed by not only the Tieszen family, but by Yankee fans
around the country. What you brought to the ballpark everyday for the last
eight years was truly amazing and I am sure Reds fans can attest to that as
well. You have had so many great moments as a Yankee it is hard to keep
track of all of them, but I will always remember your intense, fierce style
of play, whether it being hustling out a grounder, diving for a catch out in
right, or cussing on a called strike 2 that you knew you should have
whacked! This dyansty will always have a place in my heart as will my
memories of you Paulie. Whenever I listen to THE WHO's greatest hits cd, I
go right for track #13, none other than your Baba O'Riley. When I hear the
words,I can picture you coming up to bat in front of 57,000 at the big
stadium! Your the best, and thanks for the intensity!

We had a great year guys!!!!! Better than anyone expected. Oakland was too powerful. Three young live arms and a big bat named Giambi. We got past them. Seattle had one of the best seasons ever. An unbeatable team. One of the best leadoff guys and closers in the business. We got past them. Arizona had a one-two punch that couldn't be beat. Schilling and Johnson
we compared to the greatest pitching combinations of all time. And we
almost got past them too. The Yankees and this run, not the 3 World Championship run, but the down
2-0 and coming back to win in 5 run, the David beating the unbeatable
Seattle Golaiths run, and the 2 comebacks wins when our backs were against
them proverbial you know what run, that is what makes this Yankee team
great. The Yankees have always been inspirational to their city. With their
larger than life heroes, Ruth, Dimaggio, Mantle, Maris, Munson, Reggie,
Donnie, our Yankees always helped make the city great. This team however
inspired us in ways we couldn't imagine. At a time where we and our city
were literally dropped to our knees, we showed the world what being an
American and especially a New Yorker means. A tough, never give up attitude
that is as much respected as it is hated around the world. And our team,
who is also as respected as they are hated, mirrored this attitude. What
the Yankees did this post season, meant more to this city and country than
winning another title would in a regular season. And because of the events
of September 11th, this has not been a regular season. Even though we didn't become World Champions this year, I know that this
2001 NY Yankee team and all those who rooted for them are Champions in the
eyes of the World. And I know that all of you can join me in saying thank
you to the 2001 New York Yankee team. Wait till next year. P.S. Thank you Paul O'Neill

Paulie - Joe Torre has often said that he was warned, upon accepting the managerial position with the Yankees, that you are a selfish player,
concerned only with your own numbers. To that I respond: We should all be so
selfish. Your determination, drive and dedication to the game, the team, and the
fans serves as a model by which all players should approach the game. You
are "the warrior" on the greatest baseball dynasty of the last half-century,
a player whose everyday desire to be the absolute best he could possibly be
influenced not only his teammates, but also his fans. To say that you will
be missed is an understatement; with your departure, so goes a large section
of the heart of the Yankees, and a large section of my heart as well. Thank
you for the countless memories - #21 will always hold a place in my heart. I
love you, wish you nothing the best in the future, and will never forget
you. Laura - St. Louis

#21...Paul O'Neill...wow, it was a tough loss against Arizona, I am a
Yankees Fan forever, i've been going to so many games at home and sometimes
away. I wanted to see another world championship not only because this is
my team, but because i became aware of your retirement, and i coulnd't think
of a better way to put it away...but even through these losses your
dedication to the team has been outstanding, congratulations on all of the
stolen bases this year! Some people would say to me that "that guy O'Neill
has a temper, he always looks mad" and i would say, it shows his dedication
to the Yankees, some players walk in to the dugout and put take off their
gloves, put their helmet away and talk to a teamate about something else
maybe, but Paul O'Neill is looking foward to the next at bat, or getting out
on the field and doing something for the team...It won't be the same on
opening day next year, not seeing #21 run out to right field, but hey, maybe
i'll see ya in the stands watching the game, or maybe someday, standing in
place of Willie Randolph, or even Joe Torre, and maybe when i walk by
monument park, there will be a new number out there...#21... Just want to
say thanks for the dedication, and most of all, the memories...Good Luck
PAUL!!! Maybe if you have time, you can write me back, you don't know how good it
feels to for a fan to hear from his favorite players, it might be as good a
feeling as it is for you to hit that homerun, score that winning run, make
that final catch to preserve a perfect game for David Wells...hope to hear
from you Paul, and again...Good Luck! Rich
