I am from NY originally and have been a Yankee's fan since I was a little
kid. It has been an incredible blast to watch you play the game, the way it
ought to be played: with all of your heart and soul. You have absolutely
lived up to (and exceeded!) the Yankee tradition and for that you should be
proud. Since I have been out in AZ I haven't been able to watch you guys
play in person, but I did get to go to the World Series this year, and it
was a real treat. Thanks for being an outstanding Yankee and a real sportsman. Good luck!

Thank you for the memories, Paul. Your contribution, passion, heart and
soul have helped make the Yankees what they are today. You will be deeply
missed by not only Yankees fans, but true fans of baseball. Best of luck to
you and your family.

Just wanted too tell you how much myself and all Yankee fans are going to
miss you. You were and are one of the greatest Yankees ever. My personal
favorite, you are a true warrior. Congrats on a great career. You will be
missed, I look foward too seeing #21 retired on the legends wall right next
to Mattingly, jackson, Ruth, and Mantle. This is what you have meant to
myself and all TRUE YANKEE FANS. I hope you enjoy retirement, and we all
hope you will one day return to the Bronx as a coach or something. Till our paths meet again #21 forever in our thoughts.

I'm writing this to you hoping beyond all hope that you'll stay with the
Yankees for another season. But if you don't, I just wanted to say Thank You
for so many wonderful memories. You are truly one of the greatest Yankees. I
will miss seeing you out in right field and throwing your equipment in the
dugout. It's been a wild ride Paul. Thanks :)

Paul, now that it's official that you are retiring I just want to say thank you and wish you a wonderful rest of your life. It's because of you that I fell in love with baseball and I've had a
wonderful time following the Yankees the past few years, going to games at
Yankee Stadium and to Fenway when the Yankees play the Red Sox (putting up
with all sorts of rude insults from my fellow New Englanders just because
I'm wearing a #21 Yankees t-shirt to Fenway Park). My husband always tried
to get seats in right field because he knows how much I like you but now it
won't be so important where we sit. I really fell in love with baseball during the summer of 1998 and you were
the first player, in any sport, to inspire me to actually care who won.
Before that I thought I hated all sports and could never get interested
enough to care who won. Somehow you just captured my imagination and I
gradually became more and more of a fan. I, also, like Tino, Chuck and Scott but you have remained my favorite. If
all of you end up leaving this year it will seem so strange next spring. I
think the 1998 Yankees will always be my favorite team. They made me fall
in love with baseball and since then my husband and I have had so much fun
going to games in person, as well as sometimes listening to John Sterling
and Michael Kay on the radio in the car if we're on the road somewhere. And
then there is the whole saga of trying to be able to watch Yankee games when
you live near Boston and almost everybody is a Red Sox fan! We finally got
a satelite dish just so we could watch the Yankees. We, also, enjoy going to Cape Cod League games in the summer (go Wareham
Gatemen!) :-), we've been to Cooperstown twice in the past couple of years,
we have collected some baseball memorabilia and we've both read a lot of
baseball history (which is a fascinating world of its own). And, it all started with you, Paulie, because you were the first athlete who ever got me interested in watching a sport. I'm glad you had your fun. So did we and we'll miss you.

For nine seasons you have been a treasure to the fans of the New York
Yankees! I don't know how you'll ever be replaced. Best of luck to you and
your family during your retirement, one can only hope to have you back some
day as an example of how the game should be played.

Thank you for all your years as a Yankee. You made me love baseball again, I used to watch it all the time with my Dad when I was growing up.
After he died in 1987, I never watched again, until a few years ago when my
boyfriend was watching the Yankees and I really started enjoying watch you
all play together like no other team. You became my favorite because of your
spirit...you have that Irish spunk that is so great!!!! Good luck in your retirement. Have fun with your wife and kids....you all deserve it. Don't be a stranger to the New York area, we love you and will always welcome you. Thanks again for the memories.

Thanks for all the memories!! The ninth inning of Games 5 world series
brought tears to my eyes when the fans were chanting your name. The thing
that is great about you and all of Yankees you have played with is your not
only great ball players your also great family men!! And great roll models
for our kids, I thank you for that.

We just wanted to tell you that we are Yankee fans in KC, a town that
needs players like you! When the Yankees came to KC this year, we got the
best tickets we could get and fought the crowd of Yankee fans to get down
near your dugout. Our son is 8 years old and loves you guys. He got a wave
from Mr. Jeter, an autograph from David Justice and a smile from Scott
Brosius. That's a pretty big night for any kid. Later he told us that the
only thing that would have made it better was to get to shake your hand!
(You were farther out in the outfield warming up and he got pushed back by a
group of middle-aged Derek Jeter fans and missed seeing you go by when you
came off the field.) We support the team here in KC, because we are baseball fans, but our
hearts are in NY, where the two of the greatest teams are playing. Thank you, Mr. O'Neill for being such a great example of good sportsmanship, class and for showing our son what a little heart can do for a baseball player. He wants to be a Yankee someday. Good luck to you in your future endeavors. We wish you only good things

Thank you for so many wonderful memories during your years with the
Bronx Bombers. I will always remember Game One of the 1997 series against
Cleveland when you were one of the Yankees to hit in the Back-to-
Back-to-Back Homeruns! I was sitting in the upper deck and can still feel it
shaking! However, I will always remember your last regular season game at
the stadium against Chicago in a make-up gane when you hit the ball into the
right field bleachers where I was seated! Well done! Thanks for putting all
of your heart and soul into the game, and thank you for being a magnificent
Yankee! Good luck on your retirement!

Paul O'Neillllll. Hearing the fans chant your name again and again in
Game 5 of the World Series put a lump in my throat. I can only imagine how
it made you feel. The term "favorite player" changes drastically from the
time you were a kid to when you are an adult (it's hard for me to fathom
that I am two years older than you are). When we were kids, we wanted to be
that player. You'd make believe you were them when you played. In my case,
it was Bobby Murcer. As an adult, you admire how a player carries himself
on and off the field. There is no player in baseball today that better
exemplifies those qualities. That is why I wear the blue O'Neill jersey to Yankee games. Your presence in the lineup will be sorely missed, not just for your hits and defense, but
your character and, yes, warrior like mentality. Stretching a single into a double in Game 5 of the '97 Division Series
will be forever etched in mind as much as the catch of Polonia in the '96
World Series and many other moments. I will be there when the Yankees have your day and retire your number.
I'm sure they will have to drag you there kicking and screaming. Don't
think of it as owing it to the fans. We owe it to you!

Seeing your face when the 55,000 fans chanted your name in game 5 brought
tears to my eyes. You are the heart of the Yankees; the ideal personality
any team would yearn for; the perfect example of how a professional player
should carry themselves. ****PLEASE STAY FOR ONE MORE YEAR**** I'm just
not ready to accept that you will not be there next year. It's too
upsetting. You will be missed endlessly. Always remember the impact you
have had on Yankee fans and that we understand the love for the game better
now having watched you these past years. Best of luck to you - you will be
missed more than words can say.

Paul, Congratulations on an amazing career. Your talent and dedication
will be missed on field. And even though this year's Yankees came up just a
bit short of winning it all, you and the entire team should be tremendously
proud of what was accomplished. American League Champions for four years
straight! And what a World Series!!! To all of us New Yorkers who looked
to the Yankees this year to provide a distraction from the real world, you
are still our champions. Good luck in your future.

Dear Paul, I am glad that baseball has been blessed by your game. I have
took a lot of crap from braves fans for a long time. Thanks for proving them wrong. I saw you play in 98 it was unreal at Yankee stadium. My family gave the trip to my wife and I for our wedding
present. When we are watching the games on tv I tell my wife you are about
to drill one she says he's good lookin. I tell her that has nothing to do
with the game of baseball. If you are reading this you must be bored out of
your head. We will miss you Paul.

I'm writing you from the heartland of America, the state of Kansas.
However, I was born in the great state of New York, and have been a Yankees
fan for as long as I can remember. I remember sitting with my dad and my
brother always watching the Yankees games, and every time you guys came to
KC we would try and get tickets. You have always been my favorite player
and was sadly disappointed to hear that you were retiring this year. You
will be sorely missed. There will never be another right fielder like you
again.... I hope they never let another player wear the number 21 again,
because no one should wear that number other than you. I wish you the best
of luck in all that you do ....thanks for making the Yanks such a great
team- you were such a big part of their heart!

Hey Paul!! I hope you get this mesage. I just wanted to tell you how much
I admire you. I think you are the best baseball player ever. I play
fastpitch softball for the CT Charmers and my number is 21, like you. When
I go to the batting cage, all the time people tell me that my swing looks
just like yours. Paul, I'm really really sad that you are leaving. I
almost cried because I didn't get to go to any games this year and see you
in person. I'm sure the Yankees will definately miss you because of your
great talent that you brought to the team. I just wanted to say that I
thought you did great in the World Series and I think you should've been put
in the games oyu were not. Well, I guess I should go now. I'll miss you
Paul! ~*Smitty*~ P.S. I was you for Halloween!

What can you say about Paul O'Neill? More than would fit on a 1000 pages.
I can only relate to Paul and his fans that he is and will forever be the
heart and soul of the New York Yankees. His perserverance, his integrity,
his sportsmanship, his love of the game, his love of his family. I first laid eyes on Paul O'Neill in late 1993, and let me tell you, yes he is sexy, my heart flipped. I am getting butterflies in my stomach and tears in my eyes as I sit here and think of Yankee baseball without him. I
will miss him. When I hear the words Yankee Stadium I always picture Paul
in the outfield. I can remember sitting in the bleachers (prime Paul
watching) and feeling so much admiration for him. He will always be the
greatest player in baseball (to me and countless others) and I will miss
him. I love you Paul and everything you brought to baseball. You are one
in a billion. You are what makes baseball great!

For some reason a left handed batter for the Cincinnatti Reds stuck in my
head. I remember watching his determination, discipline and relentless
emotion. When you were traded to the Yankees, I thought we stole one of the
games premier players. Congratulations on an outstanding career, you are
truly worthy of being considered a Yankee great. I have never seen such a
loyal following of fans to one player in the history of sports. You are
appreciated!!! I'm proud to have been able to watch you play the game. Thank
you for the memories.

I don't know what to add that hasn't already been conveyed by everyone
else here but I guess "thank you" would best describe my sentiment. I sat in the rightfield bleachers at Yankee Stadium for 11 years and was lucky enough to have been there throughout your entire career with the Yankees. I sat there sweltering on 97 degree days, freezing in 30 degree nights,
soaked during sudden and unexpected rain storms, and stayed till the very
last moment of the game during during those long extra inning ones. All the
while happy and proud of you and the team. I cried my eyes out on the day I sat there for the last time a year and a half ago. Not so much because I knew it would be my last game up there, but
because they played Spencer that day, instead of you. All I wanted was to lean over the rail, the way I'd done so many times before, and yell "I love you, Paulie!" just one last time. Okay, I'm just kidding about that part, but what I really wanted to say,
again, is "thank you." What you did for the team, for the fans, and for New
York is something that will never be forgotten or unappreciated. To this day, my memories of those 11 years up there in the bleachers still bring a smile and though I missed the last few World Series' it's been great
rooting for you guys here in the South because you continued to make me
proud. Something I enjoyed rubbing in the faces of all these Braves fans
down here. In any case, I wish you all the best from this point on in your life. For
all those years, you shared your moments in the sun with us. Now it's time
to share all that with your family because when all is said and done, it's
your health, well-being, family and loved ones who really matter above all. May the good Lord be with you and yours forever. Thanks for the memories!

You have been my favorite ballplayer ever since I started watching
baseball. I think that you're one of the best players to have ever played
and defenitly the best right fielder. I'm from right across the river in
Washington Heights (where Manny Ramirez is from) and the last time I was at
the stadium you smacked one out of the park to right center. Anywayz, you
still have more years left in you and I don't want to see a different
outfielder next year. Peaceout and good luck with your life.

Hey Paul O'Neill, how's it hangin? I have been hearing you are going to
retire and it deeply saddens me because it feels like the other Yankees'
fans and I are already missing you. While it is entirely your choice, one
can't help but to feel a void no one can fill, but of course you. For it
is you, one is always looking over and seeing in right field jumping, making
a great catch or great throw for a great out. You are such a great right
fieldsman and no one can take your place. Then there is your at bat. You
come to the plate so determined and striving for a hit. Some call you
sefish, maybe because of this maybe or for some other lame reason, but I
for one think a dedicated player such as yourself who comes to the plate
wanting and desiring to put his legendary team up on top is not selfish, but
wonderfully selfless. You play with such will and passion, and love the
game so much, it pains one's heart to think of you not playing next year.
Your short kick at the plate, your running catch in the field will be
greatly missed by all. Even your anger, which a person can't help but to
smile at because it is usually because you hit a pop fly or struck out at
the plate, instead of makeing and hit ,and that just shows a person how
determined you are. You give hope to your team, pick them up when you guys
are down and that makes fans everyewhere love you even more. I hope when
and if you retire this year they retire your number because not another
person deserves to wear it, except for you. I am deeply hoping you
reconsider to play just one more year so, God willing, you and your
teammates can make another run for the World series and hopefully and
faithfully you and the other "Men in Pinstripes" can have at least one more
ring. I also think that even though leaving this year would be totally in
style, leaving next year with one last ring on your finger would be the
ultimate way to leave a sport and team you love. And, with the Lord's help,
you could talk your teammates and your manager, with whom you have such respect and a strong bond with, who have been rumored to be leaving this year also, into coming back with you and making one last run for the gold. Don't do it for me, do it for the Die-Hard Yankees' fans, for
New York, and for the United States. I am 12 years old and I believe in you
and the Yankees.

I wish the best for the new guy, as he has some pretty big shoes to fill. I was reading some of your letters and one mentioned how they thought you looked like Ted Danson. I don't think so at all, you've got something he can only hope for. But we won't get into that.. I wish you all the luck in the world in your future, and all

Paul, losing the W.S. was a tough way to end your career. When you think
back on your final days as a major leaguer, remember Don Mattingly. You both
did all you could to rise to the occasion, trying to almost will your teams
to win. Sadly, both careers ended the same way, with a loss. But the
memories of your last games with the Yankees will always be special, for you
and your thousands of fans. Thanks for 9 great seasons. Don't forget to show

I know it's too late to say "Don't leave us!," but that's what every
Yankee fan is thinking right now. We know how important your presence has
been on this team throughout its amazing run, right back to 1994 when the
turnaround began. We know your smooth swing and amazing patience at the plate have been an
example to every Yankee hitter, and that for every clutch hit and great
at-bat you've given us, there have been countless others from teammates that
your intensity and work ethic have inspired. We know your glove is a golden one, although it's never received official
recognition. We know your cannon arm has saved innumerable runs, not only by
throwing runners out but, more often than not, by making them afraid to run.
We know how hard it will be for any future Yankee rightfielder to earn the
confidence we've had that you would catch every catchable ball -- no matter
how much your body ached, and without ever making it look harder than it
was. Most of all, we know that you, more than anyone else, have upheld the
Yankee tradition and passed on the spirit and pride of Don Mattingly and all
the Yankee greats to this current generation. For all of us who have had the
pleasure of watching your matchless dedication, your humility, your fierce
competitiveness and your tremendous team spirit, Yankee baseball will never
be the same. You have earned our undying gratitude and admiration.

Those fantastic days of watching games and biting nails are gone. But in my mind I know they will still live on and on. But how do you thank someone who has taken you from right field to the
moon? It isn't easy but I'll try. If you wanted the sky I would write across the sky. In letters that would soar a thousand feet high. To Paulie O., With Love
Those glory years have hurried by - why do they fly away? Why is it, sir, that players grow up to be legends one day? What takes the place of home runs and diving catches in the offseasons to come? What is there for you I can buy?
If you wanted the world I'd surround it with a wall. I'd scrawl in words with letters ten feet tall. To Paulie O., With Love
The time has come for closing books and long last looks must end. And as you leave, I hope you know that you are leaving as a beloved friend. A friend who taught me right from wrong and weak from strong. That's a lot to learn - What can I give you in return?
If you wanted the moon I would try to make a start. But I would rather you let me give my heart. To Paulie O., With Love
*********** Mr. Paul O'Neill you are and always will be a true champion. I hope you will remember that 9th-inning serenade in Game 5 always because
it was the best way for us to show you that our heart is as big as yours. If I had had my way, it would have started in the 1st-inning and lasted the whole game, just the way you played it. I don't know if we can ever truly thank you for the passion and heart you
brought to the game. You've touched many lives by making us realize that we
can never quit, never give up, and never be satisfied. Watching you play was
like watching 'us' play, for you were, and always will be, the embodiment of
how we wanted to play the game, with respect, with zeal, with obsession,
with grit, with guts, with failure, with an unprecedented amount of success,
and ultimately, with heart. The Yankees will never be the same without you, win or lose. You will be missed more than you can possibly imagine. And you will forever be our
WARRIOR, #21. THANK YOU PAULIE O. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Paul O'Neill Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Paul O'Neill Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap...........FOREVER

Thank you very much for the last 6 years. As a long time Yankee fan, I
put you on the top of my all time favorite list, over even Winfield,
Henderson & Mattingly. Your intensity, talent and drive have been an
important part of the Yankee success and mystique. As much as I will hate
not having you to root for, I hope you enjoy retirement with your family and
remember you will always be in the thoughts and forn memories of this and
all Yankee fans. Sincerely, Sue

I just wanted to congratulate you on your retirement and great career.
Your the best!! You will be greatly missed. I know I speak for many Yankee fans by saying
" You are one of the all time great Yankees, and you will soon be forever
enshrined in Monument Park." Very few players make an impact on fans that last very long. But you will
be remembered in Yankee lore along side the likes of Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle,
etc. I wish you and your family all the best!!

I have been a Yankee fan since I went to my first Yankee game when I was two years old. Since I followed the Yankees I also followed you when you were on the Reds since Pinella was your manager. It was great for me when you were traded to the Yankees. You have been my personal favorite ever since. I had the priviledge of going to game 5 of this years World Series, paying tribute to you and your career, and also seeing the second miracle comeback you guys made. When the World Series was over I was and still am heartbroken. As I told my 9 year old son the next morning, you can't win them all but you should always be gracious, win or lose. You all showed a tremendous amount of class. I will miss seeing you play baseball but I applaud your decision to retire to spend time with your family. Kids grow up so quickly and they need their parents around. Thanks for so many wonderful memories and thanks for being a true Yankee.

We always laughed when you threw things in the passion of the moment and we wouldn't change a thing about you. You gave us baseball and made us fans. It's going to be hard to buy tickets again next year without you there. We wish you would still play even off the bench...but....We wish you a great life and are willing to let you go(as if we had a choice)on to bigger and better things. NYC will always love you. I'm a lifetime New Yorker and I've been a Yankee fan since I was six years
old when my grandfather, father and brother gave me a Mickey Mantle souvenir
bat they had brought home from Yankee stadium. Needless to say, I grew up
in a Yankee household and a baseball playing household. My Dad coached my
brother's team and taught both of us how to play. I was lucky enough as a
young girl to have a Dad that encouraged me to play...which I still do
today, in my mid-40's. My Dad passed away shortly before yours did, but one
of the last things he did before he died was to attend Old Timer's Day at
the Stadium with us. Fortunately, I married a Yankee fan and season ticket
holder, so the Yankee tradition lives on in our house and in my brother's
with his boys. My husband and I celebrated our 10th Anniversary this past
March at the 107th floor of the World Trade Center, which has more meaning
now than we ever could have imagined. I have loved watching you play
because you play with 150% intensity and effort...all the time. Your
frustrations and emotions are only directed at yourself, which is the heart
and soul of a true player and champion. It only makes you and the team
around you strive to be that much better, and it's the way our Dad always
told us to play. It's a great philosophy for sports, but also to follow in
life. Last Christmas, my husband ordered some photographs of you from your
brother which are now framed and proudly displayed in our hallway. I'll have
them, and the many memories of seeing you play, to cherish forever. Best of
luck in all you do in life, Paul; right field and the Yankees will never be
the same without you. Thank you for the passion, inspiration and love of
the game you've given to New York, the Yankees and the fans.

Hey Paul. Can I just tell you I have followed your career since 1987. It
broke my heart when you were traded to the yankees (I'm a reds fan) but I
decided to start following you in the yankee pinstripes and became a die
hard yankees fan. My friends and I went to chicago to see you in 1999 (we
could never really afford to go to n.y.) My regret now is that you're
retiring and I will never get to see you play in person again. I did meet
one of your former teamates from the reds. He said he was your roomate #29
and that he tried to corrupt you but you would not let him. He said you
were completely devoted to your wife and family. I still wish I could meet
you someday. Maybe you'll coach or something. I'm sorry you did not get
that 6th ring. It was painfull to watch your face as the camera kept
zooming in on you. Thanks for all the memories. You palyed with such heart
and emotion that you could almost feel it through the t.v. screen. I will
miss watching you play. All the best to you and your family.

It could be because he was traded to the Yankees on my birthday in 1992.
It could be that he looks vaguely like my 8th grade English teacher or that
he plays right field, which I also played. It could be any of these reasons.
But it's not. It's because he is the perfect New York athlete, the embodiment of what
the city is and what it is all about. There are people who call him a whiner, a complainer, or a jerk; These are
the same people who feel that the Yankees have 'bought' their success and
some of the same who think New Yorkers are arrogant & rude, heartless &
cruel. Or at least did before September 11, anyway. In short, these are the people that just don't understand. His 'whining' is his dissatisfaction with anything less than perfect.
Every at bat is his most important. Walk through the streets of New York and
you will swear that every person is convinced that where they are headed is
of the utmost importance; they plow through the streets, bobbing and weaving
frantically. It seems as nothing else matters. So he opens his mouth
sometimes. Who doesn't, especially in New York? O'Neill has always played it
straight, been frank and honest with his emotions. New Yorkers aren't afraid
to start trouble or speak their mind, and we should be grateful for a player
who represents that part of us. O'Neill is almost absurdly tenacious and gritty. Shoot him up full of pain
killers, put him in the lineup hours after the loss of his father, whatever
it takes for him to contribute. He just wants to help, wants to rise up to
the occasion. At this point, need I say anything more about the resolve and
determination of New York? Some people think that O'Neill is a sourpuss and a grouch. He isn't. He's
just all business, a stoic old-school warrior that knows his goal and stays
focused on it. He is no loveable cuddly cutie-pie. And that's what makes
him so endearing, the same way that the buildings, noise and people in New
York make some people gag and scream and the rest of us breathe deep and
thank God for our city. I for one, am glad that Paul O'Neill grimaced and growled, snarled and
spat. He took the game of baseball very seriously, and played it with all he
had. He was no overpaid superstar, waltzing around a field daintily as the
millions rolled in. He had 20+ season in both home runs and stolen bases
this past season, at age 38. This was not a game to him, it was a battle.
And he was the warrior. For all of those who dislike Paul O'Neill, who call him a cold grouchy
whiner, just watch the Yankees' World Series victories. Watch O'Neill weep
at his father's loss in 1998. Watch him celebrate at what his team had
accomplished. Sure you say, any player would be happy during the world
series. O'Neill is still a jerk. Now watch his final game at Yankee Stadium, Game 5 of this 2001 World
Series. Watch Yankee Stadium reverberate with the chants of his name,
thanking him for being the soul of the Yankees, for being the backbone from
which this renaissance was built. Watch his eyes glaze over, watch him look
around the hallowed home of legends, and watch him doff his cap quickly,
humbly, before he enters the dugout in the 9th inning. Watch and see
something about Paul O'Neill that we Yankees fans always knew, because it
holds true for the city of New York. Gravelly exterior, will of iron, heart of gold. Thank you, Paulie.

Paul, Since you are planning to retire from baseball, I want to only wish

tell torre that you want 1 more year and u want Vladdy in left feild and you
got yourself a ring. Your the man paul ill be waiting in the right feild
box seats for another homer next season. Injuries only last so long, regret
lasts forever, dont let this be your last year. I know you love the game and

What are the odds that Paul O'Neill actually reads this? Oh well, however
small, I'll take them.Last night, after the loss, I went upstairs to my bed and cried. I cried
for Paul, and for the whole Yankees team. I was born in Brooklyn, and have
loved the Yankees my whole life. The majority of people where I live don't
particularly like the D'Backs, they just want to see the Yankees lose. I
took so much crap today because I argued with everyone in school about who
would win the series. In a way, I think it's good for him to retire-it'll
be better for his body, and I'm sure his family will appreciate it. I don't
play baseball, just watch the Yankees, but my soccer number is 21. I wish
you would stay. I'm sure everyone does. But I'm glad you're doing what you
think is best.
|
The agony of having Paulie benched during games 1 & 2 behind us was replaced by the pure joy of seeing #21 back in right field where he belongs. One day MLB may figure out a solution to the dh/no dh problem. For now I treasure the sight of Paulie in right and taking his turn at bat in PINSTRIPES!! And after game 5 I never saw him more happy to be at Yankee Stadium among his team mates and the fans who love him. I will treasure the memory always.

My story is short and sweet. I have always been a Yankees fan. I am the only one in my family that is. Now, my husband and son are both crazy over the yankees. I live in North Carolina, so most of the time the only Baseball team stuff we can find is Atlanta Braves. I visited some family in Mississippi not too long ago, and was able to buy a ton of Yankee stuff. I now have Yankee Posters hanging all over my bedroom. Everynight, my son and I have a ritual of kissing our Yankees goodnight. My son is 9 years
old and plays baseball. I help to couch the league. My son cried last night when he found out Paul would no longer be with our BELOVED YANKEES. We will miss you, and THANKS FOR BEING SUCH A GOOD ROLE MODEL FOR ALL OUR KIDS. You give 100 percent all the time.

Baseball, though a grand game, will not quite be the same without you. My wife Catherine and I feel particularly blessed as over the last few
years as we have had the opportunity to see you and our beloved Yankees
play live several times. This year we managed to catch every game the
Yankees played at Camden Yards - but nothing will top being at game one of
the subway series. I just wanted to say thank you for all of the great moments you provided.
Like you, I learned the game from my Dad and have played baseball, in one
form or another, for the better part of my 39 years. Someday, when I am
teaching my kids about baseball, I will tell them about Clemente, Carew,
Van Slyke, Rose and O'Neill -- guys I thought played the game the way it
was meant to be played. I will show them the Paul O'Neill autographed ball that I bought the day
after game seven, your last game. I'm guessing your greatest seasons have yet to be played. Thanks again, 21.

As a Yankees fan since the late 60's, I've seen many players come and go
through the Yankees system, but without question, the best aquisition the
team has had in the last 30 years is Paul O'Neill. I appreciate your passion
for the game, and your leadership. I'm certain that without your presence
and determination, the transition from the '95 squad to the '96 squad would
not have produced the dynasty that us Yankee fans have so enjoyed. Thank you

The only thing worse than the Yankees losing in the World Series is the
thought that you won't be playing anymore. You have been the heart of these
championship teams and I'm afraid the team won't be able to replace that. I
have enjoyed watching you play, the total professional! Baseball could use
about 100 more players like you. But like you said in your interview after

what follows is the response of my son to a message I sent to him this

loss.
From : "Jason"

Likewise. He is a hero. I can't wait to tell my kids about him and
these teams. I still think this run is not over. No way are they going
to trade Tino now. We still have Bernie and Jeter and Rivera (who was
due to lose a game), Posada, Petitte, Clemens (he has one more good year
in him), Mussina, the future is still bright. They cant win them all.
The one thing about these past few years is that Paul O'neil epitomized
the Yankees. He wore his heart on his sleeve, and you could always
count on him in the big games. Not to mention his class. When he hit a
homerun he would actually put his head down out of the batter box!
Anyway, I have got to work. Love,
Jason

The years that you gave us in pin stripes were very memorable. I think
you have a couple of more years left in the tank and you will be missed
greatly. I am a season ticket holder and my seats are up the third base line. I
loved watching you in the dugout after each at bat. I could actually tell
my friends what you were about to do before you even did them, and they
thought I was a mind reader. I am no mind reader, I was just a fan who
loves his Yankees. You played with the biggest heart of any athlete, especially when you were
sliding into second during th 97 ALDS. You had a look on your face that
showed so much grit and determination as you hung onto second in the ninth
inning. It was as if you never wanted it to end. I will never forget the
years that you gave us as a Yankee. One last note: Joe should have left you in against Randy Johnson. He cannot pitch to lefties (Bobby V proved that) and I think you would have gotten
a hit to push Jeter home. We will never know though. Thanks again for all the great moments and memories.

Paul, I've only been a baseball fan for two years and the whole time I've been a fan of the Yankees and especially you. Your passion, skill, and integrity has kept me watching along with all your other fans. I watched Game 7 of the World Series as long as I could and when I saw you get the base hit and run full-out to try to stretch a triple, I couldn't help screaming as I cheered you on. You took your chances, and even though you got tagged out, you proved you're not afraid to try something different. In other words, you got guts. Congrats on a wonderful game, amazing season, and outstanding career. Even though your now retired, you'll still be my favorite player at heart. Best wishes and good luck, Ann Marie, age 12

Thanks for the memories! Thanks for all your hard work, your intensity,
your never quit attitude, your playing hurt, your great defense, your clutch
hitting. Thanks for restoring Honor & Dignity back to the Yankees. Your
number 21 belongs, on the wall, out in Monument Park. You have earned that
right to be called one of the Yankee Greats. Your name and memories that
you gave me, will forever be in my mind along with those of the Greats that
I saw play: Thurman, Nettles, Randolph, Mattingly, & now Paul O'Neill.
Your playing days are over, but your legacy will live on, in our memories,
in Yankee history, in the echos of Yankees Stadium, and in the next group of
players that carry on the "YANKEE TRADITION". You carried the torch high
and with pride. Best wishes on your retirement from baseball, enjoy the
rest of your life, may it be even more prosperous and fulfilling as your
playing days were. You'll be considered a YANKEE FOREVER!
