2007 Michael Jordan Celebrity Classic January 17-21, 2007
The 2007 Michael Jordan Celebrity classic was another great success. This year, the weather cooperated. The wind was reasonable and the days hot. Paul played in a very talented, golf and otherwise, foursome on the first celebrity playing day with actor Michael Douglas and NFL great Ahmad Rashad. The fourth celebrity player was none other than Super Bowl Champion, Pitttsburgh Steeler, Ben Roethlisberger. To add to the drama, Douglas’ wife, actress Katherine-Zeta Jones, followed the foursome, cheering them on though the author admits being a fan at a golf tournament does not allow quite the animation from the gallery as baseball or football. We clapped quietly as required.
A memorable hole was #10 on the turn, just in front of the gallery. The hole is called Ficus Ridge. Michael Douglas, a very good all-around golfer, drove a beautiful tee shot less than twelve feet from the hole. Ahmad Rashad did the same. It looked at this moment, not all moments, like a PGA event. Ben Roethlisberger hit a beautiful tee shot, not as great as the previous two, but well on the green. Feeling pressure from the roaring gallery perched three stories above the tee, feeling pressure from himself as usual, Paul took a mighty swing and his ball flew well over the green and skimmed the Ficus trees beside and behind the green. In previous days, this slight failure would have required a thrown helmet, maybe a club snapped in half. Paul quietly handed his club to his caddie and said, "I didn't see it but I heard it skim the Ficus trees."
This event raised funds for the James Jordan Foundation, Michael's late father, Ronald McDonald Houses in North Carolina and many other charities designated by the celebrity golfers. For more information on the event check out mjcigolf.com.
